Newcastle Racecourse Guide

Newcastle Racecourse is more commonly known as Gosforth Park and plays a prominent role in UK horse racing. Hosting meetings across the year, including evening racing, there are over 60 events held at the famous track.

Since the switch to Tapeta in 2015, Newcastle is the only all-weather track in the UK to have a straight mile. The remainder of the course, which offers races up to a distance of two miles, is raced left-handed, and it's advised horses are near the rail if they are to have an impact in the closing stages of a race.

The National Hunt course features both hurdles and steeplechase fences and can be a slog if there has been bad weather before race days. Also, a left-handed course, the final furlong is uphill, and if horses are held-up, they tend to have a better chance of making an impact in a race.
