It's one of the big days in the calendar at Newcastle on Saturday as the Gosforth Park venue hosts their Northumberland Plate card. The eight-race afternoon goes from 12-20-4.25, with the £150,000 Northumberland Plate set to go off at 2.05. We've got a race-by-race guide to Newcastle's Saturday afternoon offering.
12.20 - JenningsBet Festival Handicap (6f)
Raatea and Soldier's Minute are possibles in the opener but Simon & Ed Crisford's ANIMATE is a course winner here already and has form figures of 31-13 on the all-weather surfaces. He didn't quite see it out strongly enough at Kempton last time but the winner New Endeavour was second at Royal Ascot in the Britannia last week. This 3YO receives weight from the field and is unexposed dropping to this distance.

12.55 - JenningsBet Chipchase Stakes (Group 3, 6f)
Judicial is a former winner of this in 2020 and while he is into the veteran stages now, his Lingfield Listed second in November was a reminder of his ability. At the opposite end of the spectrum is TIBER FLOW for William Haggas, 3-4 on the all-weather and a Listed winner on turf last year. He ran well in a Conditions race at Haydock last month and this looks a good spot for him.

1.30 - JenningsBet Northumberland Vase Handicap (2m)
LA HACIENDA stayed for minor money at Down Royal last weekend over their extended two-mile trip in a Listed contest and trainer Matthew Smith will be hoping there's more to come after that first start since October. He's entitled to be very competitive after that and has the excellent Harry Davies claiming 3lb here to boot.

2.05 - JenningsBet Northumberland Plate Handicap (Heritage Handicap, 2m)
The feature race may struggle to produce something quite as breathtaking as Trueshan's win last year. GOLDEN RULES remains low-mileage and the ex-Gosden inmate defied 638 days off when scoring over this trip at Kempton in March with Oisin Murphy on board, giving away weight against some solid opposition. He's only 3lb higher and connections have been wise in giving him time to get over that effort. He's got claims with Murphy on once more.

2.40 - Pertemps Network Handicap (7f)
Wobwobwob is one that may seek to make a bold bid off the front end but ZIP has a good all-weather strike-rate including three wins over this course and distance. One of those came in January and he bagged another race at Southwell thereafter. After a break, soft ground in a Class 2 Ascot contest in May saw him only in midfield at odds of 40/1 but he's just 1lb above his previous win-mark now returned to the all-weather and is of interest.

3.15 - Pertemps EBF Novice Stakes (5f)
The newcomers will need noting in the betting but BATAL ZABEEL showed more than enough when third in a 6f York novice in May to suggest that something of this ilk will be within his reach before long and Kevin Ryan's colt sets the standard on that effort.

3.50 - Education Network Handicap (1m2f)
QAASID is enjoying a stellar 2023 so far with figures of 12323 in his five starts since February. That sequence began with a C&D win here and he was only just touched off next time under a penalty back here before also running well on his latest visit to the north-east in March. It was a decent Newmarket contest in which he was third in May off this mark and the 5YO should be competitive against for Julie Camacho back here.

4.25 - Racing Welfare Handicap (1m4½f)
Lightly-raced Easter Island is one to keep an eye on, while Lexington Knight and THE DANCING POET are obvious candidates in this finale. The latter has dropped in the ratings after going 0-6 during the winter all-weather campaign. He went very close at Doncaster four weeks ago and will be suited if they go a good clip here. All five successes on the Flat have come in July/August.
