About The King George VI Chase

One of the biggest races in the National Hunt season and often a telling point of who will head to the 2022 Cheltenham Festival and feature in the main event The Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Contested over a distance of three miles, the King George itself takes in 18 fences of the Kempton course and is open to horses aged four years and older. First run in 1937, it has been won on five occasions by Kauto Star and 12 occasions by trainer Paul Nicholls. However, in more recent years, it's been Frodon, Clan Des Obeaux and Might Bite, who have gone on to win and feature at Cheltenham, with other prestigious horses such as Long Run, Best Mate and Silviniaco Conti also boasting victories in this race.

2021 King George VI Chase Betting Preview

The racecard for the King George VI Chase is packed full of top-class runners with trainers from across the UK and Ireland throwing their hats into the ring for a potential victory. However, the UK horse racing online betting markets point towards a battle between former winner Clan Des Obeaux and last season's Gold Cup winner Minella Indo. However, we're going for something a little different for our betting choice.

In terms of form heading into this race, Minella Indo has already succumbed to a defeat by Frodon at Down Royal in the Champion Chase. Still, we feel he’ll prefer slightly better ground of good to soft rather than soft if he's to issue a challenge here. On the other hand, Clan Des Obeaux heads to Kempton for his first run of the season, which is not the norm for the Paul Nicholls runner. Often given a run out prior to this meeting, we suspect he's going to have to pull out a strong performance if he's to pick up the win.

Last year's winner Frodon currently sits at 5/1 in the online betting markets, and given his form already this season, he's our choice for the race. Jumping well in this race last season, he touched 22/1 in the betting before finally passing the post first for Bryony Frost. We suspect that she'll once again be in the saddle for this race, given that she's already partnered him to victory in Ireland this season.

Other notable runners in the King George VI card include Asterion Forlonge and Chantry House, both of whom sit above 13/2 in the betting.
