Royal Ascot Day Five Preview – June 18th
It's the final call at Royal Ascot on Saturday afternoon as five days of terrific action concludes with the Platinum Jubilee Stakes completing the Group 1 action. They race at Royal Ascot from 2.30pm-6.10pm on Saturday afternoon and once more we have selections for all the action on day five.
2.30pm - Chesham Stakes (Listed, 7f)
Aidan O'Brien is looking for a fifth Chesham win in seven years and impressive Leopardstown scorer Alfred Munnings heads the betting here but there are a posse of dangers, including Faisal Road and Alzahir for John & Thady Gosden, and Richard Hannon's game Newbury winner DARK THIRTY might spring a surprise. The second and third from that race won their next starts and he's got plenty going for him.
Selection: Dark Thirty
3.05pm - Jersey Stakes (Group 3, 7f)
Noble Truth easily won a Listed Newmarket race on comeback but the form has been knocked since. The unbeaten Monaadah rises in class and looks a menacing presence for Saeed bin Suroor but STAR GIRLS AALMAL shaped with an abundance of promise in the Irish 1000 Guineas last month – a strong contest – and could be ideally suited dropped in distance/class as Henry De Bromhead looks to get in on the Royal Ascot act.
Selection: Star Girls Aalmal
3.40pm - Hardwicke Stakes (Group 2, 1m4f)
A lack of a recent run is a minor concern but HURRICANE LANE could still be far too good in this line-up. Charlie Appleby's Frankel colt won three Group 1s last season, including the St Leger, and his only defeats came when third in the Epsom Derby and the Arc. If he's near his best the others are in trouble.
Selection: Hurricane Lane
4.20pm - Platinum Jubilee Stakes (Group 1, 6f)
A massive field of 27 runners for the concluding Group 1 race of this meeting and yet it looks to centre on one horse – HOME AFFAIRS. His stablemate Nature Strip routed the field in the King's Stand field on Tuesday and this chap defeated him at Flemington in February. Chris Waller and James McDonald can double their tally for the week. Ascot-lover Glen Shiel is a possible each-way player, especially if any thunderstorms hit Berkshire.
Selection: Home Affairs
5.00pm - Wokingham Stakes (Heritage Handicap, 6f)
James McDonald could well be in the frame again here on Lampang, Tim Easterby's charge having started the season with a smooth win at Ayr. Fresh is always liable to run well at this track, but SILVER SAMURAI arrives in cracking form for Marco Botti and his proven stamina can be a massive asset.
Selection: Silver Samurai
5.35pm - Golden Gates Stakes (Handicap, 1m2f)
Lots of Godolphin blue here (four runners) and FALLING SHADOW looks the pick of them. He eased to a win at Newbury on his return to action five weeks ago and could have plenty more to offer now reverting to a handicap for the first time. In-form Chairman for the Martyn Meade team looks to rank highly amongst a plethora of dangers.
Selection: Falling Shadow
6.10pm - Queen Alexandra Stakes (Conditions Race, 2m5½f)
The final act and the longest race of the meeting. Stratum won last year and could go well again for Willie Mullins, while Trueshan would be a shoo-in for this if he runs (needs rain, seemingly). Falcon Eight was disappointing last year but returns after a good run in what has proved a hot Chester Cup. NATE THE GREAT was fourth in this race in 2020 and, now a six-year-old, may be better equipped to see the journey out for Andrew Balding and in-form pilot Danny Tudhope.
Selection: Nate The Great

Common Royal Ascot Betting Terms
Antepost Betting - Antepost betting is very common in horse racing betting markets, particularly ahead of big races. Antepost betting is when you bet on a race before the official racecard has been confirmed.
Rule 4 - Rule 4 comes into place when a horse has to pull out of a race at the last minute after you have already placed your bet. If a horse pulls out, your horse has a better chance of winning against a smaller field, so the odds of a winner will automatically decrease from the odds you placed your bet at. You can find more information about Rule 4 with Bet UK's Rule 4 Betting Guide.
Each Way - An Each Way bet is one of the most popular types of bets when it comes to horse racing, and Royal Ascot is no different. Placing each-way bets allows you to still see a return on your bet, even if your horse doesn't win. Each race has a set number of 'places' that will still pay out a reduced win as a result if you place an Each Way bet.
Accumulator - An accumulator is formed when you bet on a number of different races to form one larger bet. For example, placing a bet on the 1:15, 1:50, 2:25, and 3:10 races will form an accumulator. This will add all of the odds of the individual winners together to calculate one figure. In order for your accumulator to win, each of your choices will have to win.
Top Jockeys & Trainers At Royal Ascot
Ryan Moore
If Ruby Walsh is the king of the Cheltenham Festival, then Ryan Moore holds the crown for Royal Ascot. For the last five years, Moore has been the top jockey at Ascot, and no other rider can boast as many wins as he can.
Frankie Dettori
Frankie Dettori is by far the most experienced jockey at this year's Royal Ascot. Since he has been riding at Ascot, he has won many Group 1 races, including 7 in one day in 1996. That day in 96 proved that regardless of what horse he is riding, as long as Dettori is involved, then there is a chance it can win.
Aiden O'Brien
Like Ryan Moore, in recent years, Aiden O'Brien has dominated Ascot Races. Only John Gosden and Mark Johnston have won more races at Ascot, although both have entered more than 100 more horses than O'Brien. His winning percentage of 14.4% is almost unrivaled by trainers that have raced a similar amount of horses, so it would be no surprise if he won top trainer in 2022. As we already mentioned, when working with Ryan Moore, the pair has seen success constantly throughout the last five years.
John Gosden
Each trainer has a favoured jockey, and for John Gosden, that's Frankie Dettori. Gosden is the most successful trainer of all time at Ascot Racecourse, with 68 wins from 433 runs. That's a win percentage of 15.7%, the best winning percentage of anyone with over 125 runs. He has always been successful, but he has failed to win top trainer since the modern-day domination of O'Brien and Moore.
