Ascot Shergar Cup Tips

Racing at Ascot is back with the unique Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup. The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is one of the most unique meetings in the horse racing calendar. Not only is there a full schedule of races, there will also be a concert held at the Ascot racecourse following the completion of all the races. The event is more of a day out than a racing meeting, with events for the full family throughout the day.

History of the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup

The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup has taken place every year since 1999. Commonly known as just the Shergar Cup, the whole event was named after legendary racehorse Shergar. The event was originally held at Goodwood racecourse, but since 2000 has been held at Ascot.

The Shergar Cup was originally set up with the aim of creating an event that would be horse racing’s version of the Ryder Cup. Unlike every other horse racing meeting, the Shergar Cup splits jockeys up into 4 different teams. A team for Rest of the World, Great Britain & Ireland, Europe and Female Jockeys. The 4 teams each have a jockey competing in every race, with each position earning points for their team. The team who has the most points and wins at the end of the event will win the Shergar Cup trophy. Prizes are also awarded to the best individual jockey and the ‘Ride of the Day’. Each team will have a nominated captain for the day. Past winners include Silvestre de Sousa, Jamie Spencer and Frankie Dettori.

The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is one of the top competitions in horse racing and one of the most unique as four teams battle it out over six races and the winning team receives the coveted Silver Trophy, this competition format is one of the most unique in the global racing calendar.

2024 Shergar Cup Racecards

In 2024, there will be six races with six different formats, they are Dash, Stayers, Challenge, Mile, Classic and Sprint.
