History of the Champion Hurdle

The Champion Hurdle first got underway in 1927, with a prize pot of £365 for eventual winner Blaris. The race had a rocky start and was cancelled multiple times before becoming a Cheltenham Festival staple in 1947. Early on, three of the greatest ever hurdlers dominated the race: National Spirit, Hatton’s Grace and Sir Ken. No other horse was able to take the crown from them until 1955. In 1984, Dawn Run was the first mare to win the Champion Hurdle, having previously already won the Irish and French equivalent races. She would later go on to win the Gold Cup, the only horse to have ever achieved such a feat.

These days, the Champion Hurdle is still one of the horse racing calendar’s most prestigious races. The race is used as the final event in the ‘Road to Cheltenham’. The Road to Cheltenham consists of the Fighting Fifth Hurdle (Newcastle), International Hurdle (Cheltenham), Champion Hurdle Trial (Haydock) and finally, the Champion Hurdle (Cheltenham).

2020 Champion Hurdle Betting Tip

Epatante @ 3/1

The early ante-post betting for the Champion Hurdle suggests it’s a two-horse race, and with good reason. Honeysuckle might be the early favourite, but with Epatante looking to race in the Champion Hurdle again, we can’t be looking any further down the field. 3/1 is a higher price than Epatante was last year, when he won by three lengths. Recently, a letdown run at Kempton on Boxing Day is the only blot on a stellar record over the last three years. We believe that run was more of a red herring than anything serious to worry about, and we are backing Epatante to win back to back Champion Hurdles for Nicky Henderson.

Epatante is 3/1 in Bet UK’s ante-post betting. Ante-post betting is basically a bet placed on a race, in advance of the racecards being 100% confirmed. So, there is every chance that Epatante doesn’t end up racing in the Champion Hurdle. But, at Bet UK, you won’t have to worry about that. Our Non Runner No Bet offer means that any ante-post bet placed on the 2020 Champion Hurdle will be refunded if your horse doesn’t run.
