Championship Betting 2022

If you're looking to place a bet on the Championship, you can do exactly that at Bet UK. However, the Championship is notorious for being one of the most difficult leagues to predict in the world from game to game, at the start of the 2021/2022 season, many would have predicted Fulham and Bournemouth's promotion. However, very few would have predicted Luton Town being in the play-off picture, Derby County coming close to avoiding relegation despite a 21 point deduction or even Nottingham Forest finishing third after picking up just one point from their first seven games. This is what makes the Championship one of the best leagues in the world, the unpredictability of the league has seen Bournemouth, Huddersfield and Brentford reach the Premier League when 10 years prior to their success, they were closer to the National League than the Premier League.

On the relegation side, things are a little more predictable with many pre-season favourites failing to avoid relegation. However, we do often see a surprise relegation. One that immediately springs to mind is Sunderland who were relegated to League 1 in 2016/17 despite being 3rd in the online betting markets for promotion at the start of the season.

Championship History

Season Champions Runners Up Play-Off Winner
2021/22 Fulham (90 pts) Bournemouth (88 pts) TBD
2020/21 Norwich (97 pts) Watford (94 pts) Brentford (3rd - 87 pts)
2019/20 Leeds (93 pts) West Brom (83 pts) Fulham (4th - 81 pts)
2018/19 Norwich (94 pts) Sheffield United (89 pts) Aston Villa (5th - 76 pts)
2017/18 Wolves (99 pts) Cardiff (90 pts) Fulham (3rd - 88 pts)
2016/17 Newcastle United (94 pts) Brighton (93 pts) Huddersfield (5th - 81 pts)
2015/16 Burnley (93 pts) Middlesbrough (89 pts) Hull (4th - 83 pts)
2014/15 Bournemouth (90 pts) Watford (89 pts) Norwich (3rd - 84 pts)
2013/14 Leicester (103 pts) Burnley (93 pts) QPR (4th - 80 pts)
2012/13 Cardiff (87 pts) Hull (79 pts) Crystal Palace (5th - 72 pts)
2011/12 Reading (89 pts) Southampton (88 pts) West Ham (3rd - 86 pts)

During this period, only one side have won the Championship on multiple occasions and that is Norwich City who won the Championship in 2018/19 and 2020/21, those campaigns were separated by a dismal performance in the Premier League. 12 of the 20 teams in the Premier League have been promoted from the Championship in the last ten years. Leicester are the only side who have gone on to win the Premier League but are joined by West Ham and Southampton as teams who have come up from the Championship and have been entered into a European Competition such as the Europa League.
