National League Betting

The highest level in National League football returns for an exciting season with four newly-promoted teams joining the action every season, alongside two teams who dropped from the Football League looking to reclaim their spot in the league above. Last season, Wrexham and Notts County fought in one of the greatest battles in National League history, dramatically increasing the eyes on the fifth tier of English football. Both teams were promoted to the fourth tier, effectively pressing the reset button on betting markets for promotion in 2023/24.

The quality of teams that are in the National League is on-paper, almost equal to that of League two, with Stockport County showing that after their promotion in 2021/22, going onto make the playoff final in 2022/23, they may have lost to Carlisle but it has ensured that every League two team will be more fearful of former National League opposition this season.

2023/24 National League winner odds

This season will be no short of excitement with Notts County and Wrexham both promoted, if Notts County had failed to make it out of the playoffs, they would have been serious favourites. However, with Hartlepool United and Rochdale dropping down to the National League, neither look like clear-cut favourites to go back up, making for an exceptionally interesting season at the top.

National League FAQs

What is the National League?

The National League marks the top level of National League Football, sitting above the National League North and the National League South. Teams that achieve promotion from the National League will move into the Football League 2, taking them into the EFL.

From a total of 24 clubs, two teams will be awarded promotion to the EFL, with the bottom four clubs being relegated to the National League North or the National League South. The league that a team is placed in typically comes down to geography but the decision is made by the FA’s NSL Committee.

How does the promotion work in the National League?

By the end of the season, the champions of the National League will be awarded automatic promotion to the Football League 2. The second and final promotion position will be given to the winners of the playoff final.

In total, there are six playoff positions available so any team finishing from second place to seventh place will be qualified for the playoffs. Fixtures will be held between the teams finishing in fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh place, with the winners progressing to the semi-finals to play the teams ending the league in second and third spots. Winners of both semi-final ties will go head-to-head to win promotion and claim their space in the Football League 2.

What is the National League North and South?

Before teams can progress to the National League, they must first win promotion from the National League North and the National League South. Teams are placed in the appropriate league based on their geographic position, a decision that is made by the FA’s NSL Committee. Two teams from each league will be promoted to the National League, bringing the total to four teams promoted. The champions of both leagues will receive an automatic promotion, with the second place going to the winner of the playoffs.

Who was the top scorer in last season’s National League?

The National League’s top scorer was led by Macaulay Langstaff of Notts County having scored 42 goals in the 2022/23 season to help Notts County to a second-place finish. This tally is followed closely by Paul Mullin of Wrexham with 38 goals to his name.
