The Course

The Renaissance Club - Dirleton, North Berwick - Par 71, 7,136 Yards

The European Tour’s season continues in the British Isles as the strongest field of the year gathers at The Renaissance Club on Scotland’s Northern Coast. Some 40 minutes drive North of Edinburgh, Renaissance stages this event for the second year running having been designed just 11 years ago by American Tom Doak next to the more famous Open venue at Muirfield links. The two previous winners have been Austria's Bernd Wiesberger, followed by Aaron Rai last season in extremely tough conditions.

Renaissance is an exposed, undulating, coastal links, with a few forestland holes, the course has something for everybody but, most importantly, will provide a good test for the field. There are just 3 par 5s and the fast, undulating, fairways will slightly negate some of the advantage held by the bigger hitters. Bunkering is fairly sparse, but very challenging for any players that come across them this week. To contend in this very strong field, players will need a good all round links game, wind management, and a top of the range short game similar to last week at Galgorm.

Scoring is expected to be low. Last year's winning score of 22 under par was the lowest in the history of the Scottish Open.

The Market Leaders

World Number one Jon Rahm (7/1) heads up one of the best fields ever seen in Europe outside of a Major Championship this week for the 37th staging of the Scottish Open. In what is a truly multinational field, Rahm leads the way on the back of his US Open victory three weeks ago. Despite never having played this event, Rahm has won the Irish Open at a similarly testing Lahinch and will be expected to challenge hard if he comes here with serious ambitions for the title. Rahm is a good links player, and showed that by the way he navigated Torrey Pines, and he will be keen to show those skills on UK soil after a few disappointing showings at recent Open Championships. Rahm controls his ball fabulously in tough and windy weather, and his quality should really shine through at this type of course. He is maybe a bit short but justifiably so given the state of his game presently.

Xander Schauffele (12/1) is another player making his Scottish Open debut, and comes off a similarly strong run of form with a tied 11th at The Memorial followed up by a 7th at Torrey in the US Open. Schauffele is a diminutive but powerful player who should be well suited to links golf, and demonstrated us much three weeks ago despite his otherwise average record in Open Championships. With his long game in such good shape, it will be the putting that is most under the spotlight this week for Schauffele, and it is his relative weakness here which makes me pause over backing him for this event. A wait and see over his prospects for next week, but I don't expect a Scottish Open victory for Xander.

Rory Mcilroy (12/1) has seen his early price shorten despite a horror show over the weekend at his home open last weekend at Mount Juliet. Rory had looked in good touch for the first couple of days but fell away sharply, and is likely to be using this event, in which he has never performed well, to be getting his game in shape for Sandwich. He is unbackable for me. Colin Morikawa (12/1) has top 10s in four of his last five events and continues to play some remarkably consistent golf. He will be motivated to compete and perform here, and seems the best of the players in this price bracket. A solid each way bet.

Andy Sullivan: 60/1 To Win

Englishman Andy Sullivan's form has been picking up nicely of late with two top six finishes in his last 5 starts added onto a 12th last week in Ireland. "Suly" as he is affectionately known has struggled over the past couple of years but undoubtedly remains one of the most capable players in the World. In this type of form, the 5 time European Tour winner looks a real threat in this field. Sullivan has won two links events including the Alfred Dunhill Championship on the East coast of Scotland where this event is held, so the suitability is there.

Andy also loves to go low, and a projected winning score of near 20 under par will hold no fear for a player who is an exceptional putter, and who was 19 under par when winning around St Andrews in 2017. This event will mean more to Andy than most as he desperately searches for a way back into the World's top 50, and I really do see him going incredibly close this week. He is therefore my headline selection with 3 Points e/w at 60/1.

Guido Migliozzi: 50/1 To Win

The form, and game, of Italy's Guido Migliozzi has exploded over the first half of 2021, culminating recently in finishes of 4th and 13th at the US Open and Travelers Championship respectively in his first events in the US. It is rare for a European player to travel to the States and perform so well so quickly, and it is testament to the genuine quality that Migliozzi possesses. The 24 year old already has two European Tour wins, and loves links golf. He won on links type courses in both Kenya and Belgium, and will love the test on offer this week; particularly off the back of his 4th place in California. Guido can go low, and seems a great bet here to take his biggest title yet with 2 Points e/w at 50/1.
