Grand Slam of Darts Betting Tips & Preview
Another week, another top tier darts event! Fans of the oche have been spoiled in recent times, with the Grand Slam of Darts being the fourth major tournament since the beginning of October, and that’s not including the World Series of Darts Finals. Michael Van Gerwen has been in dominant form in that time, picking up the World Grand Prix and Champions League, in addition to the World Series Finals trophy. His only loss was in the first round of the European Championship, where Rob Cross claimed the third major crown of his career. ‘Mighty Mike’ enters the Grand Slam as top seed and tournament favourite, with any player hoping to win the tournament likely needing to beat him. Current champion Gerwyn Price will be joined by fellow PDC tour regulars such as Cross and Gary Anderson seeking to do exactly that and Bet UK’s tipster is back to give you his take on whether they will.
Here are our darts betting tips for the 2019 Grand Slam of Darts.
Outright Grand Slam of Darts Tip
Michael Van Gerwen being available at 11/10 to win the tournament is surprising considering his recent form. The Dutchman was dominant on his way to the World Series last week, dropping only two legs in the final against compatriot Danny Noppert and averaging above 100 in all his other matches at the event. In addition, his performances at the World Grand Prix and Champions League also showed his class, with his comeback in the Champions League Final showing an ability to deal with the big occasion which often differentiates him from his rivals. While he’s not unbeatable, as shown by his European Championship result, you’d be bold to back another player to win outright while he’s involved. The draw has also been relatively kind to Van Gerwen. His group does contain former double world champion Adrian Lewis, but ‘Jackpot’ hasn’t shown the same form in recent years as those championship winning performances. BDO qualifier Jim Williams and Ross Smith complete Group A and Van Gerwen will probably be confident of topping the group, which will give him the best chance of going all the way in Wolverhampton.
Outside Chance Tip
While we think that Van Gerwen will come out on top, it is worth noting that an each way bet on any other competitor will return a profit should they make the final. We were tempted to back Price at 10/1 as our outside chance tip, however the draw means that he is scheduled to face ‘Mighty Mike’ in the semifinals should they both make it to that stage. The Welshman has never beaten MVG, so will either need to end that record or hope that someone else can knock him out of the tournament in an earlier round if he is to retain his title.
Our tip instead comes from the other side of the draw and while Dave Chisnall also crossed our mind at 22/1, we’ve instead gone for reigning BDO World Champion Glen Durrant. ‘Duzza’ made his debut on the PDC tour this year and has turned in some impressive performances. Reaching the semifinals of both the World Matchplay and World Grand Prix should give the Englishman confidence heading into this tournament, but he will have to come out of a tough looking Group H featuring Michael Smith, Nathan Aspinall and Martin Schindler. We’re backing him to do so and at least reach the final in Aldersley. He’s available at darts betting odds of 22/1 to win outright, with 1/3 odds available for the each way part of the bet.
Selected Opening Matches Betting Tips
Michael Van Gerwen vs Jim Williams
One of the highlights of the opening set of matches sees world number one Michael Van Gerwen open his tournament against BDO representative Jim Williams. While Van Gerwen has been discussed at length already in this piece and his reputation precedes him, perhaps only the more seasoned fans of the sport will know much about Williams, as he doesn’t compete on the more popular PDC tour. The Welshman is beginning to emerge as one of the top players in the BDO. He reached three semifinals in 2018 and also made the semis at the BDO World Championship this year, where he succumbed to eventual champion Durrant. He has won his first major tournament at the World Trophy since then and will probably be hoping to use the momentum he has built in recent times to do better than his debut at the Grand Slam last year, where he exited at this stage. If he continues his recent good form he may find himself on the PDC tour in the future should he wish, and we’re backing him to give Van Gerwen a tougher game than some might expect, with MVG to win 5-4 being our tip - available at 6/1. ‘Mighty Mike’s’ opening matches at three of his last four tournaments have gone to deciding legs.
Gerwyn Price vs Mikuru Suzuki
The second match we’ve picked out in the opening games sees defending champion Price face one of the two female qualifiers in Mikuru Suzuki. ‘The Iceman’ is heavy favourite heading into this match, with odds as short as 1/50 available for him to win this opening encounter in Group C. Suzuki shouldn’t be underestimated though, she is the reigning Women’s BDO champion and ranked second in the world on the female tour. The Japanese player will probably be keen to leave an impression on her debut at the Grand Slam and while we can see Price winning this one, we wouldn’t be surprised to see over 2.5 180s in the match between them, which is available at darts odds of 5/6.
Michael Smith vs Glen Durrant
Our final match of this preview is probably the pick of the first set of games, as ‘Bully Boy’ Michael Smith faces Durrant in a clash that could be crucial in determining who progresses from Group H. It will be the fourth meeting between the pair this year, with Smith leading their head to head 2-1 in terms of games. Their best of 33 World Matchplay semi final at the backend of July was won fairly convincingly by Smith, but the other two clashes - which were best of 11 legs - were tight affairs. With group stage matches at the Grand Slam of Darts being best of nine legs we expect this one to be closely contested as well, and could see it going either way. If we had to pick a winner we’d be going with Durrant at 5/6 rather than Smith, but are more confident of backing the first leg to have a 180 in it, especially as Smith is one of the more consistent 180 scorers on the tour. It’s priced at 11/10.
