The Grand Slam of Darts is a unique event with a group stage of round-robin matches and a quirky qualification process.

Grand Slam of Darts Betting

Gerwyn Price has a fantastic record in the Wolverhampton event and the Iceman has won three of the last five runnings of the competition.

The Markham man has been drawn alongside Ryan Searle, Gian van Veen and Nathan Rafferty and it’s no surprise to see Price at the head of the outright betting.

Group C looks as competitive as it gets with Luke Humphries, Dirk van Duijvenbode, Gary Anderson and Steve Lennon battling it out and at least one big-hitter will be departing the competition after the round-robin.

Tip 1 Danny Noppert to win the Grand Slam (each-way)

Danny Noppert is one arrowsmith who looks to have been handed a fairly kind draw and the Dutchman arrives in Wolverhampton in good form. The season had been a bit of a struggle for the Freeze with early exits at the World Grand Prix and World Matchplay but Noppert roared back into form at the recent European Championship.

The Dutchman beat Andrew Gilding, Rob Cross and Price before losing to the eventual winner Peter Wright in the Dortmund semi-final and the Freeze put up a 106 three-dart average in a 6-0 first-round demolition of Gilding.

That indicated that Noppert is back throwing near his best and the 32-year-old’s UK Open win last year indicates that the Dutchman has no issues performing on the big occasion.

The Freeze has been drawn alongside Gilding, Brendan Dolan and Haruki Muramatsu in Group F and there has to be a strong chance that Noppert can top that section.

If the Dutchman can come through as the section winner, a last-16 tie against the Group E runner-up awaits, and a contest against either Peter Wright, Dave Chisnall, Stephen Bunting or Stowe Buntz, doesn’t look insurmountable. The draw could open up nicely for the 2022 UK Open champion and Noppert rates a nice each-way play from the weaker half of the Grand Slam draw.

Tip 2: Chris Dobey to win the Grand Slam (each-way)

Humphries and Anderson will have eyes on the Grand Slam title, given the excellent form they have shown this season. However, that pair are housed in Group C alongside Van Duijvenbode and that looks a tough path. Perhaps Van Duijvenbode’s shoulder injury will make life easier for Humphries and Anderson, but the betting play has to be to avoid that section.

Jonny Clayton, Josh Rock, Chris Dobey and Berry van Peer are the Group B line-up. Dobey’s claim looks to be at least as strong as that of Clayton and Rock, but Hollywood is the biggest price of that trio on the outright market.

The Bedlington boy won the Masters earlier this season and made the last eight of the Matchplay, Grand Prix and European Championship in what has been a consistent and promising campaign, and there doesn’t seem anything to suggest that Dobey won’t have a big run in Wolverhampton.

Grand Slam of Darts FAQs

Who has won the most Grand Slam of Darts tournaments?

Phil Taylor has won more Grand Slam of Darts events than anyone in history winning six of the first eight tournaments. It looked like Michael Van Gerwen would overtake him after winning three in a row between 2015 and 2017 but MvG will be massively disappointed with his performances on this stage in recent years.

Who hit a 9-dart finish in the Grand Slam of Darts?

In 2022, a 21-year-old Josh Rock made it to the last 16 of the Grand Slam of Darts against Michael Van Gerwen and after MvG begun the match winning the first leg and hitting a 180 in his opening throw of the second leg, 'Rocky' made a moment he will never forget, sending the crowd into rapture with two 180's and finishing on a 141 with T20, T19 and D12. Van Gerwen would go on to win the game 10-8. However, nobody in attendance will ever forget the moment Josh Rock made his name.

What is the format of the Grand Slam of Darts?

Firstly players must qualify for the event by winning one of the Players Championships or one of the events on the European Tour. 32 players qualify for the event and are split into four pots of eight to make eight groups. The top two in each group and go into a knockout stage where the final two will be announced.
