The Course

Muirfield Village Golf Club - Dublin, Ohio - Par 72, 7,392 Yards

Muirfield Village once again sets the stage for one of the more eagerly anticipated weeks on the PGA Tour, as one of the strongest fields of the regular season reconvenes at Muirfield Village for the second consecutive week. Just 20 miles north of the city of Columbus, Muirfield is a pristine, undulating, parkland course lined by trees, and where accuracy off the tee is far more important to this week’s contenders than distance.

A par 72, with 4 par 3s, and 4 birdiable par 5s, the winning score here usually sits at around -15 and, with conditions this week predicted to be favourable, there is nothing to suggest anything different. Despite those low scores, any player not exhibiting accuracy from the tee will be severely punished by the thick rough and 77 bunkers which provide the defence for this old school venue. Added to that, players will find water in play on 11 holes. A good long game, and creative shotmaking are the keys to taming Muirfield, and I will look for these amongst the selections this week.

Last Five Winners

The Market Leaders

John Rahm (10/1) comes in as the market leader for this week's event at Muirfield Village having won a tough reversal last year with a record high winning score of nine under par. The tough set up and tight driving lines suit the better players, and the past champions list is a who's who of Major winners. That certainly suggests that Rahm should go well, however his game remains inconsistent. He has struggled to assert himself on Tour this season despite a number of top 10 finishes, he really has not contended for the win. He has a chance of course, as he does any week given his quality, but the price is just too short for me to support him in one of the strongest fields of the year.

Jordan Spieth (13/1) narrowly missed out on landing us a big win last week, although the Texan arrives at an event where he has two top 10s in the last five years in undeniably exceptional form. His driving, although substantially improved, remains the biggest concern and with the tight lines around Muirfield that is likely to be his biggest challenge. He is priced fairly given his form, but I would rather be backing him elsewhere.

Rory McIlroy (15/1) and Justin Thomas (16/1) both have fairly average records here by their own standards, although Thomas does have a runners up finish three years ago. Neither can be ruled out and probably represent as good value as the market leaders. Their ball striking is exceptional, and both will be relying on great putting weeks to elevate them into contention.

Viktor Hovland: 16/1 To Win

Viktor Holland has without a doubt escalated himself right into the top echelons of the PGA Tour over the last year. He is arguably the best ball striker on Tour at the moment, and his exceptional long game should be just the ticket around Muirfield Village. He finished a hugely impressive 3rd on his debut here two years ago, and had 3rd placed finishes in two of his last three events.

Hovland will love the need for low piercing irons and will have the advantage from the tee on nearly all of the field with his exceptional driving. I made him my selection of the week with 3 Points e/w at 16/1.

Other Betting Tip

Gary Woodland: 60/1 To Win

Gary Woodland has been playing better and better over the last few weeks with top six finishes in over 30% of events this season, and a top 15 last week. He has finishes of 4th, 5th and 6th here over the last few years, and has only ever missed the cut twice in 11 starts at Muirfield. Woodland is a similar player to Hovland in so far as it is his ball striking which sets him apart from the field. He has a much higher ball flight than the Norwegian, but with little wind forecasted this week that shouldn't be an issue, and again he is one whose destiny this week will be decided on the greens.

Woodland loves a challenge, and his short game has been excellent so far this season. I have had my eye on him for a while when it comes to this event, and I am pleased to be able to back him with 2 Points e/w at 60/1.
