World Matchplay Darts Betting Tips & Preview

It might be the middle of Summer but the darts roadshow is heading to Winter Gardens in Blackpool for the World Matchplay of Darts. Last year we witnessed the longest leg-play final in darts tournament history as Gary Anderson kept his cool to beat Mensur Suljovic 21-19. The 2019 edition also promises to be a hotly contested affair and Bet UK’s resident darts tipster is here to give you his take on all the arrows action.

Here are our darts betting tips for The 2019 World Matchplay.

Outright World Matchplay Darts Tip

Gary Anderson To Win

Whilst he may have had a difficult 2019 due to injuries that caused him to miss the Premier League Darts, Gary Anderson comes into the tournament in decent form as he looks to defend his championship. He partnered with Peter Wright to win the World Cup of Darts in June and his favourable quarter of the draw means we’re backing him to go all the way in 2019 at darts betting odds of 7/1. Only Michael Smith should pose any real threat to him on his way to the semi-final and if, as we predict, Van Gerwen exits the tournament early he should be favourite to reach the final from his side of the draw.

Where is the Value?

Winning Nationality is Scottish

Whilst we’re backing Anderson in the outright market at odds of 7/1, we think that this might provide more value for darts betting this week and is a safer bet due to getting 2 top 6 seeded players at betting odds of 21/4 which is only a small drop on the Anderson price.

Peter Wright is also in decent form and, as previously mentioned, he combined with Anderson to win the world cup of darts in June. He should be able to win his quarter with 3rd seed Daryl Gurney not in top form meaning that, in our opinion, 2 out of the 4 players in the semi-final will be Scottish and thus making this bet good value. Whilst he might be a longshot, John Henderson is also representing the tartan army in this tournament and therefore providing a third chance of this bet winning.

Win 1st Quarter Tip

James Wade to win 1st Quarter

In terms of Quarters of the draw, the 1st quarter is probably the most difficult. Not only does it contain the reigning world champion and world number one Michael Van Gerwen it also has premier league regulars Mensur Suljovic and James Wade. Whilst it is bold to go against tournament favourite Van Gerwen, we feel his recent form which has seen him fail to win a tournament since the premier league means he might fall early on. Adrian Lewis is scheduled to meet him in the second round who can prove to be a dangerous opponent. Even then the other side of this quarter is stacked with quality players.

Not only do you have Premier League semi-finalist James Wade along with “The Gentle” Mensur Suljovic, you also have two compatriots of Van Gerwen in Jeffrey de Zwaan and Jermaine Wattimena. While the two Dutchmen should provide good competition you would expect Wade or Suljovic to make the quarters. We fancy Wade will be that man and he will not only reach the quarters but also the semis which you can get at darts betting odds of 31/4.

Win 2nd Quarter Tip

Gary Anderson to win 2nd Quarter

As we have Gary Anderson as our winner tip we are effectively obliged to make him our tip for the second quarter, but even if he wasn’t the outright champion we’d still be backing him to win this quarter. Michael Smith is the only other player who we consider capable of winning this quarter and he has had a poor 2019 since reaching the World Darts Championship final.

While Chisnall, Aspinall and King are capable players on their day we don’t see any reason for Anderson not to come out on top in this quarter and at darts betting odds of 5/4 we believe this is a good value bet.

Win 3rd Quarter Tip

Gerwyn Price to win 3rd Quarter

The third quarter is tough to call. Not only does it have former world champion Rob Cross, it also has pantomime villain Gerwyn Price. Both players are more than capable of winning the tournament outright so the fact they are in the same quarter makes this a tough draw. You can’t rule out Chris Dobey or Darren Webster pulling off a shock either.

We feel that Gerwyn Price will pull through though, as Cross is in poor form since his Premier League Darts Final loss to Van Gerwen, and at betting odds of 53/20 we feel this is a decent bet. You can even get him at 5/1 to reach the final and given the state of the fourth quarter, as we will discuss next, that might be an even better bet.

Win 4th Quarter Tip

Peter Wright to win 4th Quarter

This is probably, on paper at least, the weakest quarter. It has Premier League Semi Finalist Daryl Gurney but he is woefully out of form and Peter Wright isn’t the same player he was even as short as two years ago. Aside from those two, Simon Whitlock should provide a decent threat as he has beaten Gerwyn Price, Adrian Lewis & Mervyn King in recent weeks. We feel however that Peter Wright should win this section, his recent form isn’t bad and he has more than enough quality to beat the other players in this quarter. Couple that with the fact that he beat Daryl Gurney at the US Masters and you can see why we’re backing him at darts odds of 7/4.
