In the United Kingdom, Rugby League is one of the most popular sports for betting after the likes of football betting and horse racing betting. Not to be confused with Rugby Union, Rugby League follows a different format with fewer players, more substitutions, a smaller pitch and perhaps more significantly, a different scoring system. Rugby Union awards five points for a try, two points for a conversion and three points for a drop goal or a penalty; meanwhile, Rugby League offers four points for a try, two points for conversions and penalties and just one point for a drop goal. Due to the reduced points total in Rugby League, handicap betting provides significantly better odds than it would for Rugby Union. Naturally, Rugby Union games have significantly higher margins; however, if you’re looking at a game like St Helens against Leigh Centurions, there is obviously little value in predicting the winner but picking St Helens to win by a considerable margin provides significantly better odds. Handicap bets are good when betting on teams such as the Wigan Warriors who have a good win percentage of 60% but tend to win by small margins.
