Welsh Grand National Betting

The Welsh Grand National is one of the biggest horse races in Wales, as a Premier Handicap Steeplechase during National Hunt season. Horses aged 4 and above can race in the Welsh National as it is based along similar lines to the Aintree Grand National. However, this race dates back to 1895, meaning this race is older than anybody in the world, which means there is a lot of history to unpack in this event, with all that history leading up to this years race. We've seen racecourse changes from Ely to Newport and now to Chepstow. We've seen a number of successful trainers since the change to Chepstow, but the most successful trainer has been the legendary Martin Pipe, who, if you're a horse racing novice, may recognise from the Martin Pipe Handicap. Martin Pipe won five Welsh Grand Nationals and three of those were with former BetUK ambassador Peter Scudamore. Scudamore also happens to be the most successful jockey in the history of the Welsh Grand National, winning his first event with John Spearing before working with Martin Pipe.

Welsh Grand National Odds

With around 20 runners every year, the Welsh Grand National is a difficult race to bet on, similar to a handicap race where a lot of horses struggle to reach their potential due to the big field. For example, in the 2022 race, 12 jockeys failed to cross the finish line last year due to non-runners, horses pulling up or the jockeys falling. Instances of this are the likes of Ask me Early, The Galloping Bear and Quick Wave, who were the three favourites in the race before 16/1 The Two Amigos came out victorious. This isn't guaranteed every year but more often than not, we see strong horses fail to live up to expectations while the outsiders can swoop in and cause a shock result at gigantic odds. A good example of this comes from the 2015 race, the horse Mountainous won at odds of 20/1 but since then, we have regularly seen smaller odds for the horses that have won the race.

In the last 12 years, the favourite in the Welsh Grand National odds hasn't performed bad at all, you can find the exact results of the favourite between 2011 and 2022.

  • Winner: 3 Times
  • Runner-Up: Once
