When it comes to top-class runners, one name that is hard to ignore is Clan Des Obeaux. Trained by Paul Nicholls, the ten-year-old has formidable form over chase fences, having finished second in this race last season and picked up wins at Aintree and Punchestown. He made his seasonal reappearance in the King George, where he finished second behind Tornado Flyer, and this looks to be the race to get him in shape for a crack at the Cheltenham Gold Cup. It won’t be an easy race by any means, but he likes good to soft ground, which means he should perform well here.
Dark Horse of the Day
Pats Fancy - 1:15 Newbury
Our dark horse of the day may not be the biggest odds. However, given that he’s going up against Bravemansgame, we think the odds are good value. Trained by Rebecca Curtis, Pats Fancy heads to this race with two competitive wins at Chepstow to his name and seems to relish running handicap company. Heading to this novice chase at a lower weight than his last victory at 10-6, he’s carrying a stone less than the favourite, something which may play to his advantage. He is entered for two races at the Cheltenham Festival, and this could be the perfect preparation if he can find a win here.
Longshot of the Day
Knappers Hill - 3:35 Newbury
Our longshot of the day comes in the form of another Paul Nicholls horse. Knappers Hill has run well so far this season and picked up wins at Wincanton and Chepstow. However, he steps up in class here at Newbury and will come up against some seasoned opposition in the form of Jetoile and Broomfield Burg. He should have the stamina to see out the distance given his National Hunt flat race experience and will look to build on his positive form here.
