England Vs Germany Match Preview

Germany v England preview

Germany will be seeking revenge for their Euro 2020 exit when they welcome England to Munich in the Nations League on Tuesday.

England sent Germany packing in the last-16 stage at Euro 2020 courtesy of a 2-0 win with the goals scored by Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane.

That was England's first win over Germany since 2016 and Gareth Southgate will be hoping to repeat that feat at the Allianz Arena.

Flick era well underway

Germany's exit from Euro 2020 brought an end to Joachim Low's 15-year stint in charge of the national side and Hansi Flick has since taken the reins.

Former Bayern Munich boss Flick oversaw a 2-0 win over Liechtenstein in his first game at the helm and he has yet to taste defeat in 10 fixtures, picking up eight victories and two draws.

They were riding an eight-match winning streak prior to March's 1-1 draw with the Netherlands and they followed that up with the same result against Italy last time out on Saturday.

That draw against Italy in Bologna was their first outing in this season's Nations League and they will be seeking a win when they return to home soil on Tuesday.

Flick has won all four of his home games in charge of Die Mannschaft, watching his side keep three clean sheets and score 19 times.

England eager to bounce back

England were unbeaten inside 90 minutes across 22 successive games prior to Saturday's 1-0 loss against Hungary.

It was far from the perfect start to this season's Nations League for the Three Lions and Southgate will hoping his side can get back on track at the first attempt.

With just five games, including Tuesday's outing, until England face Iran in their opening game at the 2022 World Cup, each fixture is hugely important.

Prior to the loss in Hungary, England were unbeaten in five away outings, keeping four clean sheets.

They have won three of their last five matches in Germany, picking up victories in 2001, 2008 and 2016, although England lost their most recent trip when going down 1-0 in 2017.

Sterling could step up

Raheem Sterling found the back of the net in the Euro 2020 success over Germany and he could come back into the starting XI for Tuesday's clash.

The Manchester City forward had been struggling with illness last week and he was restricted to a place on the bench against Hungary.

James Justin, who made his debut against the Magyars, is struggling with a calf problem and isn't expected to be involved.

Phil Foden remains unavailable after returning a positive Covid-19 test.

Reus set to return

Borussia Dortmund forward Marco Reus missed Germany's draw with Italy last time out due to injury but he is back in training and could feature at the Allianz Arena.

Flick doesn't have any new injuries to contend with but he is expected to tweak his starting XI with a fully-fit squad to pick from.

Leroy Sane looked off the pace last time out and could lose his spot in the starting line-up to Jamal Musiala.

There could also be a change at the back with David Raum tipped to come in for left-back Benjamin Henrichs.
