Last Week’s Results: Last time out, Cobley correctly predicted a 19/1* place in Patrick Cantlay, check out his tips below to see if he can win again this week.
TPC Louisiana - 7,400 Yards - Par 72.
There is a very different feel to the PGA Tour this week as we head to the southern state of Louisiana for the Zurich Classic in what is a Ryder Cup style foursomes and fourballs format seen only once a year on Tour.
TPC Louisiana has played host to this event since 2005, and provides a more relaxed test and environment to that which the players are used to week in, week out. The tee-to-green test is relatively easy as the field averages roughly 65 percent of fairways and 67 percent of greens in regulation, unusually high for a Pete Dye track that normally provide quirkier, stiffer, tests. There are five water hazards on the course coming into play on seven holes to test the field. Last year’s winners were American duo Billy Horschel and Scott Piercy.
The Market Leaders
There is an international feel to the top of the market this week with big name Australian duo Adam Scott & Jason Day heading the betting at 7/1, with European duo Sergio Garcia & Tommy Fleetwood sitting just behind them at 8/1. This week is likely to see some longer priced teams contend in the more relaxed environment. The scoring is fourballs Thursday & Saturday, and foursomes Friday & Sunday, so expect some very low scores, and a lot of movement in play.
Rob’s Golf Betting Tips
The two Patrick’s, Reed & Cantlay, come into this week on the back of a solid run of form with Cantlay posting top 10s at both The Masters, and last week at the RBC Heritage where our pick went odds on with 3 holes to play before falling away, allowing CT Pan to claim his maiden Tour victory. Cantlay is, however in sparkling form, and could not be better compliment than by his partner Reed. The former Masters champion is a fantastic match play golfer as shown by his superb Ryder Cup form the last time that tournament was held in the US, and his below par showing in France was not unexceptional amongst the US team. I would back Reed to once again show his class in different formats of the game, and for him and Cantlay to strongly contest this week with 3 points win at 12/1*
In what is expected to be relatively tough and windy conditions in Louisiana, I have chosen two players that will enjoy anything that creates a more testing environment, the like of which they will be familiar with from their time in their native South Africa. Harding has been a revelation over the past 6 weeks since heading to the PGA Tour, and was incredibly close to landing us a place at 300/1 at The Masters 2 weeks ago. Our concerns there were that he might be overwhelmed by the occasion and the company, but there have been no signs of that encroaching on the talented young player’s game, and this could be the perfect environment for him to really excel.
In Branden Grace, he has a familiar and highly able partner. Grace has also shown flashes of form recently, and the pairing could be particularly solid in the Friday & Sunday foursomes when they play alternate shots. I recommend a stake of 2 Points e/w at 45/1*
Next we go for a Korean pairing that seems wildly overpriced in this type of format. Sung Jae Im has contended all season, whilst Whee Kim has developed into a very solid and consistent Tour player who cannot be written off. In their familiar company, and the changed surroundings, I expect this duo to be around the top 10 for both formats, and this could combine to see them challenge for a title that is not out of their grasp come Sunday. I will stake 2 Points e/w at 90/1*
The biggest price pairing that I am looking at this week is the American duo of Harris English & Johnson Wagner. English has excelled in this format before when it was in Mexico, winning back to back titles alongside Matt Kuchar. Although Wagner is not quite of that ilk, he does have wins behind him, including in this State, and both will be welcoming of the more relaxed environment away from the trials and tribulations of trying to hold onto their Tour cards. Both are capable of winning, and can get hot at any time. They should perform as well as any team in the fourballs, and if they can keep it together in the foursomes, could be a force to be reckoned with. I recommend 1 Points e/w at 125/1*
