Regnum Carya Golf and Spa Resort hosts the Turkish Airlines Open for the third consecutive year. The course is fairly straightforward with wayward drives rarely punished and we can expect plenty of birdies this week. Justin Rose won the tournament shooting 18 under par last year and Thorbjorn Olesen triumphed in 20 under the year before and we can expect something similar again come Sunday. The weather looks set to be good all week.
The top pick this week will be the naturally gifted Thai Kiradech Aphibarnrat. Aphibarnrat already has four European titles to his name and has proven capable of winning all over the world. The Thai may appear somewhat unsuitable for the demands of the modern game, his heavy set frame at odds with the muscular gym driven bodies of many of today’s top golfers, but that shouldn’t fool you. There are few weaknesses in Aphibarnrat’s game, he plays at a lovely tempo and his short game looked in very decent shape last week when he posted an excellent 4th place in China’s WGC event. Aphibarnrat’s game is all about rhythm and confidence and he’s a man to keep on the right side of when looking close to his best. Last year saw him finish a credible 6th so we know he can score well here, thus everything points to a big week and he looks well worth a wager at Bet UK’s 25/1*.
Our second bet will be the champion of two years ago Thorbjorn Olesen. In 8 rounds here Olesen averages less than 67 shots per round, romping to victory the first time the course hosted the event and finishing 5th last year. Olesen is on the verge of breaking into the very highest echelons of the game and his Ryder Cup debut will have given him the belief that he belongs right next to golf’s superstars. The Dane posted an excellent 7th place finish last week and his credentials to go close here are there for all to see. Bet UK are taking no chances at 14/1* but so strong is the case for Olesen this week that he has to be included in the staking plan on a course he clearly adores.
Big Names at the Turkish Open
Justin Rose understandably heads the betting. The world number 2 is the defending champion and his consistency is truly remarkable, Rose hasn’t finished outside the top ten in his last five starts and a good showing once again looks all but guaranteed. At around 4/1* he can’t be considered a betting proposition though, there are too many talented gunslingers capable of shooting the lights out in this field to chance Rose at that price. Next in the betting is Tommy Fleetwood and Bet UK have installed him as their 31/4* second favourite. Fleetwood has risen to new heights this year and is of course capable of winning this week, but I’d consider Olesen just as likely a winner and the Dane is a much bigger price. Whilst Fleetwood is currently playing well nearly every time he tees it up, his two efforts on the Turkish track leave a bit to be desired having never broken into the top twenty. Shane Lowry will attract some support at 20/1* following his second place finish a couple of weeks back at Valderrama, but that is a very different track to this week and that field lacked strength in depth. Of more interest, but still passed over is 23 year old Chinese sensation Hao Tong Li. Li’s game looks in superb working order at the moment and he’s posted a string of excellent finishes in recent weeks. That combined with a second place finish behind Olesen two years ago points to another good week, but there’s not quite enough juice in the price to pull the trigger.
Belgian birdie machine Thomas Pieters is our third pick at Bet UK’s 30/1*. The tall power packed bomber is showing signs of getting back to his brilliant best without ever quite managing to do it for four rounds in a row. Last week’s 18th place was typical of Pieters’ in and out season when a brilliant second round 64 propelled him into contention only for the weekend to turn into something of a damp squib. This birdie laden Turkish layout should be right up Pieters’ street and his 11th place finish on his sole look round last year confirms this. Pieters will be desperate to sign off the season in style and with events rapidly running out this may well be his best chance to do it.
Our fourth and final wager in this event is Englishman Paul Waring at Bet UK’s generous 150/1*. Waring gained his breakthrough victory at the Nordea Masters early this year but struggled to maintain his form after that. His last two outings suggest the tide may be turning slightly and he looks a big price given he was a respectable 14th in this event last year. He looks well worth a small bet to outrun his odds.
Outsiders to Note
Ryan Fox remains one to keep an eye on and when he does finally oblige it will likely come on an easy course such as this. The New Zealander’s effortless power should ensure he has a host of birdie chances this week and he warrants consideration at Bet UK’s 64/1*. Martin Kaymer is in dreadful form, but will be working as hard as anyone in an attempt to climb back up the golfing ladder and a sudden return to life wouldn’t be the greatest surprise. Whilst at 200/1* expect a better showing from Tapio Pulkkanen who was never likely to play well around the tight confines of Valderrama when last seen and will much prefer being able to open his shoulders this week.
