Who hit the target? - Swansea City 0-1 Crystal Palace
Swansea City exited the Carabao Cup at the first attempt, but a young side can certainly leave the game with some credit. The team included seven players making their first team debuts, with the majority of the matchday squad still in the u23 squad. The Swans almost held their Premier League counterparts as Palace struggled to get going in the first half. A 70th minute strike for Alexander Sorloth was enough to separate the sides in the end after a close cup encounter.
There were a number of youngsters who impressed for Swansea last night. Yan Dhanda was bright again, George Byers was energetic throughout the match, and Courtney Baker-Richardson could have grabbed a goal. But there was one player in particular that caught Bet UK’s eye.
Could Daniel James be a future Swansea City star?
Daniel James was one of the young players who got the nod ahead of last nights match. But this wasn’t his first appearance in a Swansea shirt. James came on as a substitute for Swansea in last year’s 8-1 demolition of Notts County, even managing to grab the 8th goal. James was first included in the matchday squad at just 18, in Swansea’s FA Cup match at Oxford in January 2016. Although he didn’t make an appearance, he was handed a 3 year deal as a reward for his progression through the youth ranks.
Last night, James was a constant threat down Swansea City’s right hand side. His first opportunity came after a beautiful free kick pass from Matt Grimes. After picking up the ball on the right hand touchline, James dribbled his way around 4 Palace defenders before curling his shot over the bar. James continued to threaten throughout the first half, but his best chance of the game came after the break. Yan Dhanda played a weighted through ball into the box for James to run onto. Opposing goalkeeper Vincente Guaita was quick off his line though and managed to block Daniel James’ shot.
James has already been called up to the full Wales national squad and has plenty of experience in the Wales development squad. If he continues his progression at Swansea, then he looks like he could be a key player for years to come.
