Sheffield United v Swansea City Match Preview
Swansea City kick off their season against Sheffield United at 5:30 pm on Saturday 4th August. The Jack Army will be travelling to Bramall Lane in force to watch Graham Potter’s first match in charge of the Swans. It will be Swansea City’s first match in the second tier since 2011, after 7 years in England’s top flight. Sheffield United will provide a good first test for Swansea after the Blades pushed closely for a playoff place last year. Both teams will be expecting to be challenging at the top end of the table come the end of the Championship season.
Swansea’s Preparation for the 18/19 Championship Season
Swansea come into the game after a tough pre-season across Europe. The Swans won their first game against Yeovil but fell to losses from Eibar and Freiburg. The 2 losses did come to top flight European opposition, so there doesn’t need to be as much concern for Swansea fans.
Inevitably after the drop to the Championship, Swansea City have lost some of their squad from last year. Alfie Mawson, Andre Ayew and Lukasz Fabianski have all left the club. But Graham Potter has brought in some reinforcements, with new signings Joel Asoro and Barrie McKay both expected to feature prominently in the upcoming season.
Graham Potter will be hoping that is new signings will quickly fit into the team, and into his system. Potter’s Ostersund side were known for keeping the ball for long periods, something that could have been previously said about Swansea City. If Potter can get the Swans playing back to their best, then the fans can look forward to the upcoming Championship season.
Sheffield United’s Preparation for the 18/19 Championship Season
Sheffield United’s pre season was a success overall. The team remained unbeaten, even managing an impressive 1-1 draw with Italian giants Inter Milan. The Inter Milan team included stars Handanovic, Icardi and Asamoah, proving that it was no walk in the park. The Blades also recorded a 1-0 victory against Portuguese side Maritimo before a 2-0 win against Doncaster wrapped up their preparations.
Off the field, Sheffield United have had no problems attracting players, but they have spent minimal amounts of money. 7 of their 9 new acquisitions have been on free transfers. John Egan and David McGoldrick both come into the side with years of Championship experience, something United were lacking last year. Young midfielder David Brooks was shipped out to Bournemouth in a reported £10m move, the only first team player to leave the club.
Last year, Chris Wilder had Sheffield United challenging for the title up until Christmas. A remarkable run of early season form had United top in November and in the playoffs until February. The second half of the season was disappointing, with Wilder’s side struggling to really put together any run of form. If the Blades can keep a run together for the whole season, they could be a force to be reckoned with.
Bet UK’s Prediction for Sheffield United v Swansea City
Sheffield United will be a tough test for Swansea City and will be a true Championship test to kick off their season. Swansea’s side has more quality, but in the Championship the best teams are often the teams that work the hardest and have the most experience. If Graham Potter can get Swansea playing football, Swansea will be more than capable of competing all season.
