Safeway Open Betting Tips

The Safeway Open Golf Betting Tips

After the Ryder Cup, Bet UK's golf betting expert Luke Tredget returns with his betting tips for the Safeway Open.

The Course:

Silverado Resort in Napa, California once again hosts the Safeway Open as the new PGA season kicks off with an interesting opening event. Silverado is a par 72 with four par 5’s and is shorter than the average PGA course at just 7,166 yards. The wind blew hard in the final round last year and Brendan Steele still won in 15 under, so expect a birdie filled week with something closer to 19 or 20 under being the winning score this time around.

Patrick Cantlay - 12/1*

Bet UK have Patrick Cantlay as their 12/1* favourite and there can be no doubt they’ve found the right man to head up the market. Cantlay is already the world number 22 a position the vast majority of this field won’t get anywhere near during their careers. There’s a strong case to be argued that Cantlay will soon be a top 10 in the world golfer and if that does turn out to be correct then we can’t pass up double figure prices against what looks moderate opposition by PGA tour standards. Cantlay has few weaknesses in his game and despite having never played in this event before it is unlikely Silverado will have anything to worry one of the PGA’s brightest young talents and Cantlay is readily included in our staking plan.

Notables Players:

We can’t go too much further without mentioning the man who has won the last two renewals of this event and that man is Brendan Steele. Bet UK rate a third consecutive Steele triumph a 37/1 shot and whilst it’s not totally dismissed the fact remains he arrives here in incredibly poor form. Those who do take the 37/1 will point to the fact he turned up at Silverado last year with a similar profile of missed cuts and lowly finishes, but overall it takes too much of a leap of faith to back Steele for the most unlikely of three timers. Bet UK’s second favourite is Brandt Snedeker, but he had back trouble towards the end of last season and I’m no fan of backing players at relatively short prices who rely so much on the flat stick. Third in the betting is Ryan Moore and he is greatly respected, a decent ball striker Moore has two top 20’s from his only two visits here. Phil Mickelson comes next in Bet UK’s list and it’s impossible to consider backing him on the evidence of last week’s Ryder Cup performance. Of course Phil will be much more at home playing on the easier Californian track as opposed to the tight French masterpiece that strangled the life out of Mickelson’s game in front of millions across the globe last week. Joaquin Niemann has been widely touted as a potential future superstar of the game, the teenager from Chile has made an immensely promising start to his career and Bet UK are showing him plenty of respect by putting him in at 25/1.

Emiliano Grillo - 21/1*

Our second bet of the tournament is 26 year old Argentine Emiliano Grillo. Grillo won here in 2015 and has since posted two more respectable top 30 finishes. His 28th place finish last year should probably have been better as he was tied 5th going into the final round only to suffer horrendously in the gale that swept across Silverado in round four. Grillo posted an excellent 7th place in Boston five weeks ago and had a string of top 10’s last season as he continued to progress as a world class golfer. Bet UK have him at 21/1* and he’s a small bit of value at that price.

Peter Uihlein - 44/1*

It’s rapidly becoming time for the power packed Uihlein to step up to the plate and perhaps this week could see this underachiever gain his breakthrough PGA tour win. Uihlein finished off last season with a few respectable finishes and given his talent should be going off a touch shorter than Bet UK’s 44/1*. A missed cut in his only start here will contribute to that somewhat inflated price, but we can forgive that and he sneaks into the staking plan. Uihlein was once considered to be virtually on par with his good friend Brooks Kopeka, but has watched on as Kopeka secured 3 majors. Perhaps watching his buddy play Ryder Cup golf last week will inspire Uihlein to get the new season off to the fastest of possible starts.

Patrick Rodgers - 45/1*

Just like Uihlein, Rodgers is an exceptionally talented maiden whose first win should come sooner rather than later. 6th here in 2015 Rodgers should be capable of tearing the par 5’s apart this week and this sort of field strength is where he’d be looking to gain his first PGA tour win. His best finish so far was 2nd in the 2017 John Deere Classic and it’s worth noting that that event like this one is not known for its difficulty and we can expect the easy conditions this week to coax the best out of the gifted 26 year old. His only win on the web.com tour was also on a track widely regarded as easier than most, with the winning score being 17 under which will be along the lines of the winning score this week. We’ll have a small bet at Bet UK’s 45/1*.

Outsiders to Consider:

Nick Watney has fallen down golf’s pecking order in recent years but did show some bits of promise towards the back end of last season and may interest some at a three figure price. Curtis Luck comes from the web.com tour with a tall reputation having finished 3rd in the putting average stats and 9th in the par 5 scoring charts thus he merits some consideration at Bet UK’s 100/1*. Course form gives South African Tyrone Van Aswegen a squeak as he has two top 10’s from his previous three starts here. Finally it’s worth noting there will plenty of new faces on our television screens this week as a whole host of web.com graduates take their first step on their new journey on the PGA Tour.
