Price Boosts On Every Team To Win The Premiership

Saracens - 11/10 Favourites for the Premiership Title

Last Season For Saracens

Despite finishing second again in the regular season, Saracens turned up the heat in the playoffs and won their 4th Premiership in 5 years. Not only did Saracens cement their spot as the best team in England, they also won the Champions Cup, making them officially the best team in Europe. They have star quality on the pitch with the likes of Alex Goode, Mako Vunipola and Owen Farrell leading the line. Anything less than another finals appearance at Twickenham would have to be considered a failure for this Saracens squad.

Why They Could Win The Title

As we mentioned above, Saracens easily have one of the best squads in the continent. They have unparalleled talent across the field and there are few teams who can match them. Based on pure talent alone, Saracens are ahead of the rest of the league. That’s not to say that the coaching is sub-par or easy, Mark McCall clearly knows what he is doing. With talent on and off the pitch, Saracens are going to be tough to overcome.

What Will Hold Them Back?

There isn’t really any obvious flaw that will keep Saracens from winning another Premiership. The only thing that might work against them is complacency. We’ve seen it across a range of sports, where a team that has dominated for years suddenly switches off and finds themselves off the pace. It will be down to Mark McCall and his backroom staff to keep his Saracens’ squad motivated once again this year.

Exeter Chiefs - 5/2 To Win The Premiership

Last Season For Exeter Chiefs

Exeter were the most impressive side in the league leading up to the playoffs, but again fell to Saracens in the Premiership final. The Chiefs were the top try scorers and had the best defence in the league, so it’s tough to see where they could improve. In any other era of rugby, Exeter would probably be winning the Premiership every year. Unfortunately, they’ve come up against Saracens who slightly edge ahead of them and limit just how far Exeter can go.

Why They Could Win The Title

They still have to be considered for the Premiership because of how well they perform in the regular season. For 22 games every year, Exeter steamroll their way through the league and prove why they are one of the top teams in Europe. They manage to consistently score more tries than any other team in the league, while simultaneously maintaining the best defence.

What Will Hold Them Back?

Can they continue to perform when it matters? Exeter have reached the Premiership final for the last 4 years, but have only came away with 1 win. Exeter actually have the better record against Saracens in regular season matches, so the question has to be asked about how these players handle the pressure of the big stage. If they can take that form all the way to Twickenham next June, then the title will be theirs.

Gloucester Rugby - 16/1 To Win The Premiership

Last Season For Gloucester Rugby

Gloucester were the ‘best of the rest’ last season, finishing in 3rd behind the big two of Exeter and Saracens. They reached the playoffs for the first time in 8 years and showed a real sign of progression under the tutelage of Johan Ackermann. Danny Cipriani was just one of the reasons that Gloucester were so effective last year. The fly half got back to his best form and came as close to getting back into the England as he as for the last 18 months.

Why They Could Win The Title

If Gloucester can keep improving on the progression that they had last year, then they are the closest team to breaking into the top 2. The step up in their game last year was largely unprecedented. They cut the inconsistency out of their game and improved on their unimpressive away form to finish 3rd. With a couple of new signings in Joe Simpson and Chris Harris, Gloucester have mainly kept the same squad. The management clearly have a plan with a core group of players and will be hoping to take that leap into the top 2.

What Will Hold Them Back?

They still need to prove whether last year was the new norm, or if it was just a one off fluke. Gloucester have underperformed for years now, even when being tipped to make a title push in the pre season. After last year’s performances, many think that Gloucester have finally got over the hump that had been holding them back for the past decade. But, they will still need to prove that they can build on last year. Finishing 3rd and reaching the playoffs will mean nothing if they fail to at least reach the playoffs again this time around.

Northampton Saints - 28/1 To Win The Premiership

Last Season For Northampton Saints

Northampton might not have been the most successful side in rugby last year, but they were definitely one of the most entertaining. They scraped through into 4th place to reach the playoffs. That accomplishment made them the first team to qualify for the playoffs with 11 losses, but also the team with the most tries for a 4th place finish. That style of rugby might be exactly what we want to see as fans, but will the board at Northampton think the same? Entertainment can only bring you so far and at some point, Saints will want to see an actual return.

Why They Could Win The Title

Northampton have an outside chance at the title because they are so good going forward. As we spoke about, no team finishing in 4th has scored more tries than Northampton did last year. Cobus Reinach is a perfect example of one of the beneficiaries of last years play. Reinach ended up as the top try scorer in the whole Premiership. There’s no denying that Reinach is a top talent, but not many would have picked him as top try scorer before the season started.

What Will Hold Them Back?

If attacking is a clear strength for Northampton, then defence is definitely what they need to work on. They conceded the joint most tries out of the top 7 last season, as well as conceding more points than everyone apart from Harlequins. Their defence is part of what leads to their exciting style of play, with constant scoring always a threat at both ends of the field. But as we mentioned, how long do Northampton wait before sacrificing some of that entertainment and focusing on shutting other teams out? If Northampton can sure up their defence, a place at the final in Twickenham isn’t out of the question.
