Bristol Bears v London Wasps - 19:45pm Friday 27th December
Bristol had started the season very impressively, but they suffered their worst loss of the season last weekend away at Saracens. Despite taking a 10th minute lead, Bristol were completely overawed by Saracens’ brilliance and fell to a 47-13 defeat. Realistically, this is the type of result that could have been expected at the start of the season, but there is reason to be disappointed after the season they’ve had so far. Bristol still sit in 3rd, so there is no reason to panic yet. If they are going to win this weekend however, they will need a better second half performance than they had against Saracens. Bears finished on a scoreless 57 minute run, which will be the main cause for concern for Pat Lam.
Wasps’ disappointing start to the season continued with a 6 point defeat at home to Harlequins on Saturday. Wasps actually started the match promisingly, and were on course for just their second win of the season. A couple of tries followed an early penalty, and within 18 minutes, Wasps were 17 points to the good. From there, the home side capitulated however. Either side of half time, Harlequins went on an unanswered 28 point scoring run that gave them a commanding lead. Wasps did respond with a 69th minute try to bring the game within 6, but it was already clear that there was little chance of Wasps gaining any points. It won’t be any easier against a Bristol side that always impresses at Ashton Gate, so we wouldn’t be surprised if attacking had been the main focus of this week’s training.
Exeter Chiefs v Saracens - 15:00pm Sunday 29th December
This season, Exeter have done what they do best - dominate the regular Premiership Rugby season. They sit top of the table as it stands, with 20 points, just a point clear of Northampton in second. Last week they had the simple take of playing Leicester, who have become the whipping boys of Premiership Rugby this season. The Chiefs actually started poorly however and there might have been a shock defeat on the cards. After an exciting first half, Leicester were 22-14 up, but Exeter switched on after the break. An early penalty, followed by 2 tries in quick succession put the result beyond doubt and Exeter ran out as comfortable winners. Exeter’s ability to come from behind might come in handy against a Saracens side that is bound to test their defence.
It’s difficult to look at the table and completely ignore Saracens’ position, but in reality, that’s just what we have to do. With such a tight league this year, Saracens might still have an outside chance of making the playoffs, and this game will be a true test of their credentials. Last week, they easily beat off another contender in Bristol, with a commanding 47-13 win. 7 tries were scored by Saracens, from 5 different scorers. Alongside the scorers however, it was Owen Farrell who put in a kicking masterclass with 5 conversions in less than ideal conditions. The depth in Saracens squad is truly standing out now that everyone is back from World Cup duty. Even with a -35 points deduction, Saracens just can’t be ruled out this season.
The Rest Of The Week 7 Fixtures
Northampton Saints (5/13) v Gloucester Rugby (2/1) - 15:00pm Saturday 28th December
Northampton look like a dead cert for the playoffs already this season, sitting just one point behind perennial leaders Exeter. They suffered their second loss of the season last weekend, but it wasn’t a completely dejecting result, with Saints performing admirably. Gloucester are in 5th at the moment but expect them to continue to rise this season. Last season, both of these sides were in the playoffs and this will definitely be the highlight of the 3:00pm games on Saturday.
Bath Rugby (20/33) v Sale Sharks (27/20) - 15:00pm Saturday 28th December
Bath easily bounced back from their loss against Saracens with a dominant win away at London Irish. 6 different try scorers across Bath’s team show that they have the full squad to potentially make a late playoff push this year. They’ll face a tough outfit in Sale however, who’s huge points differential sets them apart from a tight middle of the table. Not only have they been sound defensively, they’ve managed to hammer some opponents and grab some impressive wins. Sale are the betting outsiders, but might be expecting a win at Bath.
Worcester Warriors (5/13) v London Irish (59/20) - 15:00pm Saturday 28th December
Worcester have surprised a few this season, but last week was a dismal performance from the Warriors. Worcester failed to score a try and only managed a single penalty as they suffered a 36-3 loss at Gloucester. They now sit just a point better off than London Irish, who suffered a big loss of their own last weekend. The newly promoted side haven’t looked completely out of place this season, but don’t expect a stellar game against Worcester on Saturday.
Harlequins (4/9) v Leicester Tigers (9/5) - 16:30pm Saturday 28th December
Harlequins are one of the up and down teams of the Premiership this season, winning 3 and losing 3 matches. They’ve failed to get a consistent run together this season, but a match against Leicester is the perfect chance to build on last weekend’s win. Leicester’s season already looks all but over as all of the positivity from the summer has waned away. When Saracens’ inevitably get over their points deduction, Leicester will sit at the foot of the table and one of the best teams in recent memory looks like it could be spending a season in the Championship.
