Premier League Darts Betting Tips & Preview: Night 1 - Newcastle
The Premier League Darts campaign for 2019 has already got off to a polarising start and not a single dart has been thrown. The scheduled lineup has been shaken up massively with the withdrawal of Gary Anderson due to a back injury.
The PDC have decided to make a big call with how to replace him, going with a different player in each venue for the first 9 weeks of the competition. This is a move that has split darts fans, with some believing it is great exposure for players that wouldn’t normally get the opportunity on the big stage while others believe it is unfair on players such as Simon Whitlock and Dave Chisnall, who have worked hard all year to earn their spot.
As it is, for Night 1 of the Premier League Darts it is local lad Chris Dobey from Bedlington who will be taking his temporary place in the competition. He is likely to have the full support of the Newcastle crowd too in his match against Mensur Suljovic. Defending Premier League champion Michael van Gerwen is the overwhelming favourite once again and gets started against the man he beat in the World final earlier this month, Michael Smith.
Here are our darts betting tips for The 2019 Premier League Darts Night 1 in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Outright Premier League Darts Betting Tip
MICHAEL VAN GERWEN - 1/2*
Predicting Michael van Gerwen to win any darts tournament is not really a tip, but in this case with his closest rival Gary Anderson out of the picture it will take a monumental effort for anyone to properly challenge MVG for the title. Other top players such as Rob Cross and Peter Wright are woefully out of form too, so for either to last the full 17 weeks keeping up with the quality of the reigning World Champion will be an extremely difficult task.
2019 has also started in fantastic fashion for van Gerwen, winning the World title followed by success in The Masters while not really getting out of third gear. That is a scary prospect for the rest of the field, who know that they will need to play at a superhuman level to even beat him on a one-off occasion.
Bet UK list odds of 1/2* for MVG to win his fifth Premier League Darts title which looks short, but it is extremely tough to look past him over the course of the competition.
Premier League Darts Predictions - Night One Newcastle
James Wade vs Raymond van Barneveld
James Wade is darts betting odds of 23/20* to beat Raymond van Barneveld and we believe that provides good value due to the huge differences in recent form between the two players. Wade has been on a great run in what has turned into a bit of a career resurgence. Winning two TV titles in a row at the back end of 2018 was a shock but showed that The Machine really does mean business.
Wade reached the final of The Masters darts this past weekend in a losing effort against Michael van Gerwen and will look to take that great run into Thursday. Van Barneveld is a legend of the game but has simply not been the player he used to be over the last 12 months. This will be Barney’s final Premier League Darts season and we believe it will start with a defeat.
Gerwyn Price vs Daryl Gurney
This will be the battle of the two main pantomime villains on the PDC tour as neither player get a particularly rousing reception wherever they go. Daryl Gurney initially turned crowds against him in the 2017 World Grand Prix Final after a bit of gamesmanship on stage allowed him to overcome Simon Whitlock.
Gerwyn Price drew the ire of the fans much more recently, also in a final. The Grand Slam of Darts final saw things get heated between Price and Gary Anderson, leading to The Iceman being punished with a £21,500 fine and a suspended three-month ban for his behaviour. This contest is expected to be fairly even and a 6-6 draw at odds of 33/10* looks like good value.
Chris Dobey vs Mensur Suljovic
When players come in as a late replacement the element of surprise is often with them. Chris Dobey will certainly not have expected to be playing a Premier League darts fixture in 2019 but that is the situation he will find himself in on Thursday evening due to the withdrawal from the tournament of Gary Anderson.
Named as one of the 9 ‘contenders’ to take Anderson’s place at different venues, Dobey takes on the Austrian Mensur Suljovic who has struggled for consistency over the last few months. He did demolish Simon Whitlock 10-1 in The Masters, but we fancy Dobey to cause a shock at odds of 3/1*.
Michael van Gerwen vs Michael Smith
As noted, Michael van Gerwen is in tremendous form coming into yet another Premier League season. He looks almost unstoppable at the moment and it is going to be an uphill task for Michael Smith to get the better of him on Thursday night.
Smith is still recovering from losing that World Darts Championship final on New Year's Day against MVG and will be looking for some early revenge here. We all know that Smith has the talent but he will need to play at a massively high level to even trouble the defending champion.
Peter Wright vs Rob Cross
With neither player in any sort of form, this is a very tough game to predict. Since winning the 2018 World Darts Championship, Rob Cross has been hit and miss but has mostly struggled in the big events. He started off really slowly in last years Premier League and will be looking to do a lot better this time around, particularly with a more open field as there is no Gary Anderson.
Peter Wright has had a difficult few months and has looked far from his best. Snakebite is a player that often goes through patches of form and he is certainly not in a purple patch at this moment in time. We can’t really call this one and believe that this may go right to the wire for a draw with odds of 3/1*.
