AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am Golf Betting Tips
Golf betting expert Luke Tredget brings you his tips for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am. Head over to Bet UK’s online sportsbook for the latest golf betting odds on all PGA and European tour events. You can also get golf betting tips for all major golf events at Bet UK's sports betting blog.
Once again we have an event played over multiple courses. Since 2010 the rotation has been the same, Pebble Beach being comfortably the most famous of the three with Monterey Shore and Spyglass Hill completing the triumvirate. The cut is made after 54 holes and the final round played at Pebble Beach. TV viewers will often find coverage frustrating as a whole host of celebrity amateurs feature in the footage. The courses tend to play short and easy, Pebble and Monterey are classic seaside links whilst Spyglass is tree lined. Pebble Beach hosts the US Open this year and it is highly likely preparation of narrower fairways and longer rough has already begun.
The Big Names This Week
Bet UK won’t have struggled to decide who to make favourite this week, Dustin Johnson is clearly the rightful market leader. Year after year DJ contends at this event and alongside a plethora of top 5 finishes also boasts two victories. The big hitting slugger arrives here on the back of a successful raid of Saudi Arabian gold and few would be surprised should he enter the winner’s enclosure come Sunday night. However at just bigger than 5/1* nobody is missing a trick and we can happily let him win at that price. Next in the betting is Jason Day, but unfortunately his remarkable consistency means there’s very little juice in his win price. Much like Dustin Johnson, Day has a fantastic record in this tournament, having posted five top 11 finishes in the last six years and essentially there are no weaknesses in his game, but at single figure prices he has to be left alone.
Irishman Lowry is a man to stay on the right side of this week. Links golf is bread and butter stuff for Lowry and his record in this event is solid enough, he’s made the cut every year he’s teed it up and finished 14th in 2017. His long game was in fabulous order during the desert events where he followed his victory in Abu Dhabi with a solid 12th in Dubai. Lowry has a wonderful touch from the fringes and whilst there’s no doubt his putting can sometimes leave something to be desired, the confidence he gained from getting over the line in Abu Dhabi may hopefully alter that. We can safely assume Lowry will arrive full of confidence and a big week is fully expected. Bet UK are 33/1* and that is well worth a wager.
By adding Reavie to our staking plan we’re hardly finding a hidden nugget, but his credentials look so solid that it would be reckless to omit the Kansas born swinger who is playing the best golf of his career. 3rd in the Sony Open and 4th in what for him was a home game last week (he now resides in Scottsdale) there seems no reason to believe anything but a good week is ahead for Reavie. Indeed his performance at Scottsdale was highly notable because despite him being a local, Reavie doesn’t have the power of many of the more physical types that so often dominate PGA Tour events such as the Phoenix Open. These short courses will play to his strengths as shown when finishing runner up here last year, and few in the field seem more likely to play well.
South African Branden Grace is made for links golf. A low drilling ball flight penetrates wind better than most and last week’s 2nd place in Arizona was a surprise bonus. He’ll be rightfully delighted by that performance, and will be teeing it up this week in an event much better suited to his considerable skill set. 20th here last year on his only look round, it’s perfectly plausible to expect an even better showing this week. The fact it appears that Pebble Beach will already have been toughened up in preparation for the US Open is another string to Grace’s bow, as the South African adores a testing grind. Bet UK quote 34/1* and that looks well worth taking.
We’ll complete our staking plan with a 125/1* shot in the shape of the talented but frustrating Patrick Rodgers. There are a whole host of gifted maidens on the PGA Tour, but Rodgers is right near the top of that list. A sweet swinger who oozes power it’s just a matter of time before Rodgers nets a victory in top company and perhaps this could be the week. He arrives here on the back of three missed cuts, but it’s been clear for a while consistency is not Rodgers’ strength. In his first and only attempt at this event last year Rodgers finished 8th and a return to happier hunting grounds could easily inspire this perennial underachiever to unleash his considerable golfing gifts.
Brandt Snedeker has an incredible record in this event having won it twice. Nobody in the field putts better on these greens than Snedeker and we can once again expect his limited long game to be compensated by some wonderful putting. Phil Mickelson was a surprise flop last week in Arizona and has won this tournament a remarkable four times, and will no doubt have plenty of supporters at Bet UK’s 25/1*. Patrick Cantlay needs to be on all punters radar nearly every time he tees it up, his superb driving and all round top notch long game should ensure he posts a respectable finish at the very least this week. Adam Scott looked to be back to something like his best when last seen in the Farmers Insurance Open, should his game be truly back to near peak levels then he’ll be a threat to all this week. Whilst those happy to back a player who’s never played the event are pointed in the direction of Korean Sung Jae Im, everything points towards him being a huge talent and a PGA victory is almost certainly imminent.
