Old Firm - Season So Far
The first Old Firm Derby of the season is fast approaching, with both Celtic and Rangers looking to rise to the top of the table. Edinburgh side Hearts currently hold the top spot but expect it be be occupied by one of the Glaswegian giants come the end of the year. Steven Gerrard looks forward to his first Old Firm Derby, with Brendan Rodgers needing a win to put Celtic’s poor start to the season behind them. Both clubs have had different starts to the season, but the Old Firm can completely change that.
Celtic’s 18/19 Season So Far
Celtic’s campaign hasn’t got off to the best start, both domestically and in Europe. Last season’s champions lie 2nd in the Scottish Premiership at the moment. However, considering it was only 2 years ago that the club went 69 games unbeaten, fans will be disappointed that the Celts have already lost a game. Their defeat came on on matchday 2, a 1-0 loss away at Hearts. Their 1-0 win at Hamilton last weekend was hardly convincing either. The team that Rodgers first built when he came to Celtic seems to be getting found out after 2 years. Moussa Dembele and Scott Sinclair aren’t hitting the form that defined the unbeaten run, with midfielder Scott Brown not able to cover as much ground as he once could. If you think Moussa Dembele can turn his season around and score against again Rangers, Bet UK's sportsbook is currently offering odds of 15/1* for Moussa Dembele to score a hattrick.
It will be the European campaign that worries Celtic fans the most. Celtic comfortably dispatched both Alashkert and Rosenborg in the first 2 Champions League qualification rounds, but came unstuck against AEK Athens. A 1-1 home draw was followed by a 2-1 defeat. In truth, Celtic never looked like threatening AEK and were lucky that the match finished as such as tight contest. Rodgers and his team now has a chance to redeem their European campaign in the Europa League, but got off to a less than ideal start again Lithuanian Champions Suduva. A 1-1 draw wasn't the worst result to be heading into a second leg at home with, but Celtic should have done better. The second leg finished 3-0 to put Celtic in the Europa League group stage, but now, all eyes will be on the Old Firm.
Rangers’ 18/19 Season So Far
Rangers fans will be enjoying life under Steven Gerrard this season. Gerrard’s first foray into management couldn’t be going much better, Rangers are currently unbeaten in the 11 games that he has been in charge. Rangers started their European campaign in early July, entering the Europa League 1st Qualifying Round. So far, Ranger’s routine for European football has followed a similar pattern, a comfortable win in the first leg, with a draw in the second. It has worked so far, with Rangers reaching the Europa League group stage, after a draw with FC Ufa after being reduced to 9 men. Rangers could get another win and clean sheet against Celtic. Bet UK's online sportsbook is currently offering odds of 6/1* of Rangers to win to nil this weekend.
In the Scottish Premiership, Rangers’ start to the season doesn’t look as convincing. They currently sit on 1 win and 2 draws, but have already faced Aberdeen and Motherwell, with Celtic looming as well. If not for 2 last minute equalisers, Rangers would have 3 wins out of 3. Kyle Lafferty has joined the club after scoring the winner for Hearts against Celtic, and hit the ground running in his second debut for the club. 2 first half goals in the thrilling 3-3 draw with Motherwell must give Gerrard hope that the can partner the free scoring Alfredo Morelos, and fire Rangers to success. Rangers fans can hope for an improvement this year, but a second place finish will be classed as success as they look to close the gap on Celtic.
