How They Reached The Quarter Finals

Despite a blip at the end of the group stage, Nigeria comfortably finished their group after 2 easy wins. They started their campaign with two 1-0 wns over both Burundi and Guinea, thanks to late goals in both matches. The shock of their campaign so far came against Madagascar, who beat them 2-0 to finish top of the group. Madagascar have been the surprise of the tournament, winning their group and beating Congo to set up a quarter final against Tunisia. In the round of 16, Nigeria played a thriller against Cameroon. Odion Ighalo gave Nigeria an early lead but before the break, Cameroon turned it around and were leading 2-1. Ighalo was instrumental again in the second half, scoring the equaliser before setting up Arsenal winger Alex Iwobi for the winner after 66 minutes. Nigeria advanced to the quarter finals and Odion Ighalo will be hoping for some personal glory as well. He is currently tied for first place in the golden boot standings, and will surely want to grab a goal to add to his tally.

How They Reached The Quarter Finals

After struggling through the group stages at the 2019 AFCON, South Africa produced the shock of the tournament in the round of 16. They were initially drawn in Group D alongside Ivory Coast, Namibia and Morocco. They actually struggled significantly during the group stage, losing against both Ivory Coast and Morocco. They did beat Namibia however, scoring their only goal of the group stage and ensuring they qualified as one of the best 3rd place teams. They were drawn against host nation Egypt in the round of 16 and were huge outsiders. The South African’s might not have had much of the ball, but they weren’t disgraced and had a fair amount of chances. Particularly from long range, they came close throughout the match and a breakthrough looked like it was inevitable. The opener finally came in the 85th minute, as Thembinkosi Lorch capitalised on a counter attack and slotted the ball into the bottom corner. Goalscoring is still a worry for South Africa but their impressive defensive performances give them reason to believe against Nigeria.

Under 1.5 Goals - 6/5

Bet UK’s Headline Betting Tip

Nigeria to win and under 2.5 goals - 9/4

South Africa have had an impressive run, but Nigeria’s win over Cameroon shows that they can beat the best of teams at the African Cup of Nations. A tight defence for the South African’s could limit any chances however and there won’t be too many goals in this one.
