Who Hit The Target? - Millwall 1-2 Swansea City
Swansea City recovered from a poor start at Millwall to overcome the odds in their 2-1 victory. Second half goals from Kyle Naughton and Oli McBurnie secure the win for Swansea, but it could have been very different. Just 5 minutes into his league debut, youngster Courtney Baker-Richardson was sent off for a rash challenge. After a poor first touch, Baker-Richardson was too eager to get the ball back and lunged into a two footed challenge.
Millwall failed to make the one man advantage count and went into the break at 0-0. Murray Wallace managed to head the Lions in front early in the second half, before the Swans succumbed to more injury worries. Captain Leroy Fer had already been withdrawn before the break, before Martin Olsson made way shortly after Millwall’s goal. Olsson’s departure may have been a blessing in disguise however, as Jefferson Montero stepped up to take his place.
Jefferson Montero Makes The Difference
Straight away, Jefferson Montero was the difference between Millwall and Swansea City. 10 minutes after coming on, the Ecuadorian set up Kyle Naughton for his first goal of the season. The Ecuadorian used his lightning fast pace to latch onto a long diagonal ball, before turning his man and setting up Naughton on the edge of the box.
His second assist for Oli McBurnie was even better. This time he was sprinting down the pitch with the ball at his feet, running almost the length of the pitch. A quick one-two with Bersant Celina put Montero into the box. The winger placed an inch perfect cross to McBurnie at the back post, who easily finished into an empty net.
Montero has mainly been limited to chances from the bench so far this season, but he has now given Graham Potter a major selection headache over the international break. If he can link up with McBurnie has well as he did against Millwall, then Championship defences have a lot to worry about.
