This is a real treat for fight fans around the world. This rivalry has everything. McGregor makes his long-awaited return to the cage after 2 years away. It’s no secret that the brash Irishman is the biggest star in the UFC today.

Khabib, who grew up in the mountains of Russia and who began wrestling bears as a child is an undefeated wrestling machine. With 26 fights and 26 wins he’s the only undefeated champion in the UFC with the longest winning-streak in the sport. But how do their styles match up?

McGregor: A Master of The Sweet Science

The Dubliner has 21 wins, 18 by knockout. But the fighters behind the numbers are what’s more impressive. Firstly, Jose Aldo, a Brazilian MMA legend who went undefeated for 10 years without so much as a scratch on his face. Aldo beat some of the best UFC fighters in the business with notable wins over Chad Mendes, Kenny Florian and Frankie Edgar. However, it only took McGregor 13 seconds to send Aldo to the canvas and take the featherweight title. McGregor was a two-weight world champion when he was signed to Cage Warriors and he wanted to replicate that in the UFC. So McGregor got his wish and fought the ‘Underground King’ Eddie Alvarez, who many fighters and experts thought would destroy the Irishman. However, this fight went like no one expected. Every time Alvarez was touched by the left hand of McGregor he went on wobbly legs and hit the canvas before eventually being finished in the second round.

Whether it’s the mind games, the boxing pedigree, timing or technique, anyone who steps into the cage with ‘Notorious’ must respect the power. Khabib hasn’t been hit hard enough or looked like he’s been in trouble yet, so we don’t know how he will react. However, Khabib does come in with wide punches, which could leave him vulnerable to the straight left. He also bobs his head down where McGregor could catch him with an uppercut. The Irishman’s knockouts and power speak for themselves.

Conor McGregor 1st Round - 11/2*

Khabib Nurmagomedov : Wrestling Greatness

It’s well-known that Khabib wrestled bears as a child and the footage is compelling. But the real talking point is that his wrestling is so good that he’s never lost a round in his UFC career. He has destroyed everyone who he has ever faced. His formative years began in Dagestan, which is a hotbed for producing world-class, Olympic level wrestlers. McGregor can be taken down and has been taken down by lesser wrestlers. He overcame the Chad Mendes onslaught but gave his back to Nate Diaz, only to get choked out and get his first loss in the UFC. Khabib has said he wants to ‘punish’ McGregor for the bus attack and for everything he’s said in the past. And with most of Khabib’s UFC wins coming by either submission or decision, a KO/TKO seems unlikely.

With Mcgregor’s MMA losses all coming from submission and many questions over his cardio and fight fitness, the Russian could slide in a rear-naked choke in the later rounds. Khabib is well-known for his relentless cardio too.

Khabib Nurmagomedov 5th Round - 20/1*
