Man United v PSG Betting Preview

Manchester United v PSG Champions League Betting Tips

The Champions League returns when Manchester United host PSG in the round of 16. This will be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first taste of European football in charge of United, and he might be wishing he had an easier start. PSG are currently running away with Ligue 1, 10 points clear of Lille in second. However, their European form might not be as promising as expected. They still qualified top of their group, but were hardly convincing against Napoli and Liverpool. Neymar has already been ruled out of both legs of the tie, so perhaps Manchester United can make their way into the Champions League quarter finals for the first time since 2014.

How did they get on in the Group Stage?

An unconvincing performance in the Champions League group stage has always been rumoured as one of the reasons for Jose Mourinho’s sacking from Manchester United. United got off to a good start with a 3-0 win away at Young Boys, although just 1 point from home games against Valencia and Juventus quickly soured the European campaign. However, a quick turnaround in Turin gave United a 2-1 away win that gave them hope of still qualifying. Despite a 2-1 loss at Valencia in their final match, United did manage to qualify in second place on 10 points. Just 7 goals scored in 6 matches was the main worry for United, with one of those goals being an own goal and another being a penalty.

How did they get on in the Group Stage?

Despite finishing top of their group, only fine margins in a couple of games saved PSG from a season of dreaded Thursday nights in the Europa League. Although they were lucky at parts, their campaign got off to the worst possible start with a last minute 3-2 defeat at Liverpool. Thankfully, they faced whipping boys Red Star Belgrade and won 6-1 to quickly put that defeat behind them. A 2-2 draw against Napoli was the first time their fragilities were shown. Going behind twice, PSG were saved by a remarkable 95th minute Angel Di Maria strike. Another draw in Naples was followed by a 2-1 win over Liverpool, a convincing win against proven opposition that was just what PSG needed. A final day win away in Belgrade confirmed PSG’s top spot, with Liverpool pipping Napoli to second place. With Neymar ruled out, Mbappe is second top scorer for PSG and will need to pick up the goalscoring duties.

Manchester United v French Teams Head to Head

Manchester United Wins - 13
Draws - 11
French Teams Wins - 2

Manchester United have never faced PSG in a competitive match, so we’ve decided to take a look at how they’ve got on against French teams in European action. Clearly with 13 wins and just 2 losses in 26 games, history will swing this one the way of the hosts. The last 3 times Man United have faced French opposition has been at this stage of the competition: Lille in 06/07, Lyon in 07/08 and Marseille in 10/11. A 2-1 aggregate win was their last success, with Javier Hernandez grabbing a double. Overall, Man United’s defence has stood out against French attackers, but will they be able to keep Cavani and Mbappe quiet?

Bet UK’s Betting Tip

Over 3.5 Goals

Neither Manchester United or PSG are known for being solid at the back, especially with the attacking talent on show. Even with Neymar sitting this one out, we can expect plenty of goals.
