Inter Milan v AC Milan Betting Preview
The Derby della Madonnina takes on extra significance this season, with Inter and AC Milan facing contrasting challenges both on the pitch and off it.
The Milan derby is a rivalry built upon the complexities of history, politics, class and civic pride, and remains one of the most fiercely contested fixtures in European football. Each season the game brings with it an added layer of intrigue to populate its ever-growing backstory and, with both clubs now under Chinese ownership, the fortunes of the big two in Italy’s second city seem to be forever entwined.
Neither Milan club has performed to a level befitting the expectation of its fans in recent years, but only Internazionale can truly claim to be in the midst of a revival. The Nerazzurri are back in the Champions League after a six-year absence, while AC Milan continue to face financial strife and nearly endured the humiliation of being kicked out of European competition.

The Unending Battle For Milanese Bragging Rights
This fiercest of rivalries has often been based on the pursuit of silverware as the Milanese pair have continually battled each other for Italian football supremacy. Not so in recent years though; the most recent trophy won by either was AC Milan’s capture of the league title in 2011 - the same year Inter clinched the Coppa Italia. The historical head-to-head tally in the fixture couldn’t get much closer with Inter having won just one more derby than AC.
Last season’s encounters resulted in an Internazionale win in October followed by a dramatic goalless draw as the season reached a finale back in April. That was the game in which Inter striker Mauro Icardi somehow managed to miss two open goals. The Argentinian surely still has nightmares about the first of those chances when he managed to miss the unattended Milan net from five yards out.
Icardi scored a hat-trick in the earlier match, helping his side to a narrow 3-2 victory. That game was something of a thriller and despite Milan being robbed of a point, the result hastened the end of Vincenzo Montella as AC Milan boss.
Milan V Inter: An Intriguing Battle Of The Bosses
In the opposite dugout, Luciano Spalletti is into his second full season in charge of Internazionale. The 59-year-old has enjoyed a much-travelled coaching career, taking in spells at the likes of Udinese, Roma and Zenit St Petersburg.
Meticulous and with a famed eye for detail, Spalletti’s side plays as a cohesive unit with short, sharp passing football underpinning a strong and fluid formation. Tending to dominate possession, Inter’s strategy going forward involves recycling the ball and looking for an opening for the front striker or the attackers flanking him.
In the opposite dugout, Montella’s replacement Gennaro Gattuso was promoted from the AC Milan youth setup and was rewarded with a three-year extension for overseeing an upturn in the side’s fortunes. The former Rossoneri midfielder still has a way to go to convince some sections of the support that he can restore the club to its rightful place, but the 40-year-old is tipped in many quarters to become a top manager.
Gattuso’s AC Milan are not always pretty but they play with passion and a solid defensive line which works in unison. Attacks are launched with a flowing possession which springs from out wide or through Franck Kessie operating as a true box-to-box midfielder.
World Class Talent On Display In Milan
Several Inter players had a strong World Cup, none more so than Ivan Perisic and Marcelo Brozovic. The Croatian pair were part of one of the finest midfields at the summer tournament in Russia and their showing on the biggest stage bodes well for Inter’s domestic and Champions League campaigns.
Milan derbies tend to produce goals. Although the most recent resulted in a 0-0 draw, the four matches before that averaged four per game, so who lines up in attack could prove key to winning the match.
Internazionale’s successful retention of star striker Icardi will prove key to their campaign. The Argentinian’s figures in front of goal continue to creep up each season, and he’s now topped 100 goals for Inter. Hitting 29 in Serie A last season, the Nerrazurri hitman could have a shot at winning the European Golden Shoe if he can surpass that tally in 2018-19.
Milan may have been forced to offer their prized assets for sale ahead of the season in a bid to balance the books but keeping hold of Patrick Cutrone could prove crucial if this campaign is to be deemed a success. The 20-year-old scored 10 goals after breaking into the first team last season and joined fellow forward Alessio Romagnoli in pledging their commitment to the Rossoneri cause.
It was abundantly clear that Milan needed to add a 20-goal-a-season man to their ranks to challenge for a European football spot, and the addition of Gonzalo Higuain is intended to do just that. These may be troubling times in the red-and-black portion of the San Siro, but with these two clubs in a perpetual duel to come out on top, this one could go either way.
