Grand National History
The Grand National is an incredibly famous National Hunt horse race that was first held way back in 1839, with the horses jumping over 30 fences across 2 laps of the course. In total, they will travel over 4 miles before reaching the finish line. With relatively small beginnings, the Grand National has now become a worldwide phenomenon with a staggering prize fund of over £1 million.
Grand National Winners
2018 saw the race won by Tiger Roll ridden by Davy Russell and trained by Gordon Elliot. The Irish horse held off a late challenge from Pleasant Company to win the illustrious race by a photo finish. In terms of famous past winners, the first official victor was Lottery back in 1839, a horse ridden by the jockey Jem Mason. Fast forwarding to the 1970s and it was Red Rum who became immortalised with 3 Grand National wins in 1973, 1974 and 1977. In more recent times, winners have included Ballabriggs, Many Clouds, Rule The World and One For Arthur.
