Sevilla (2/1) v Manchester United (6/4) - 20:00, Sunday 16th August
This could have easily been an all-English semi final, as Wolves were minutes away from extra time before Sevilla scored a late winner. Lucas Ocampos scored a late header, but it was almost a different night as Raul Jimenez’s early penalty was saved. However as we predicted in our Europa League quarter final preview, Sevilla’s experience clearly played a part as the tie went on. On the other hand, Manchester United needed 120 minutes to finally beat Copenhagen. Goalkeeper Karl-Johan Johnsson put in the performance of his career, and his heroics almost sent Man United packing. But, Bruno Fernandes’ extra time penalty finally broke the deadlock and sent United through. Both sides played cagey ties in the Quarter Finals, and as things start to get a bit nervier, don’t expect free flowing football from either side.
Inter Milan (10/13) v Shakhtar Donetsk (7/2) - 20:00, Monday 17th August
Inter Milan put Bayer Leverkusen to the sword early on in their Europa League quarter final, scoring twice in the opening twenty minutes. It was an explosive performance from Inter, who were largely led by Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian seems to be back to his best at Inter, with plenty of midfield fire power behind him to supply him with chances. In a tough draw, Inter arguably face the easiest team in Shakhtar Donetsk. Yet, they have already beaten Atalanta, Benfica, Wolfsburg and Basel in this year’s Europa League. Just like any year with Shakhtar, their team is a blend of Brazilian flair and hardworking homegrown players. But, this should be the end of the road for them against a superior Inter side led by Antonio Conte.
