Roma (13/5) v Manchester United (41/50) - 20:00, Thursday 28th April
This tie is all but over following an explosive first leg at Old Trafford. After falling behind early on, Roma quickly fought back and found themselves 2-1 up at halftime. But, Manchester United came out flying in the second half. Edinson Cavani scored a brace, before Bruno Fernandes added his second. Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood also got in on the act and gave United a 6-2 lead heading into the second leg. Whilst it was a commanding victory, the 2 away goals from Roma can give them some hope. If they can get off to a strong start at the Stadio Olimpico, then those 2 away goals could be vital. But, if they have to go attacking from the outset, then they’ll be left very vulnerable at the back. That will play right into the hands of Man United, who have always had success playing on the counter. Add United’s stellar record away from home into the mix and there’s plenty of excitement still left in this tie. With both sides needing an early goal to aid their cause, we can see plenty of action in this game.
Arsenal (4/5) v Villarreal (3/1) - 20:00, Thursday 28th April
Compared to Roma and Man United, Arsenal’s tie with Villarreal is a lot more wide open. A sloppy start almost cost Arsenal dearly in the first leg, as they were 2-0 down with just under half an hour played. When Dani Ceballos was sent off early in the second half, it looked as though Arsenal’s European dream may be over. However a late Nicolas Pepe penalty, followed by an Etienne Capoue sending off for Villarreal, gave Arsenal plenty to play for back at the Emirates. Away goals are always vital at this stage in the competition, and Arsenal are arguably favourites thanks to that late effort. Neither side looked too threatening in the opening leg. Villarreal took advantage of Arsenal’s awful early set up, and it took a penalty for Arsenal to finally create a clear cut chance. With both sides likely cagey coming into this one, we can’t see many goals. We expect Arsenal will take a relatively early lead and simply sit back to absorb Villarreal pressure, knowing they shouldn’t be in too much trouble.
