Euro 2020 Group C Betting Preview
On paper, Group C might be amongst the easiest to predict at this summer’s European Championship. But, the Netherlands have been known to slip up at major tournaments and with an unknown commodity in North Macedonia, there could be some big shocks in this group. At Bet UK, we’re previewing every group at Euro 2020, as well as putting together a complete Euro 2020 Betting Preview ahead of this summer’s event. You can also find all the latest Euro 2020 betting odds over at Bet UK’s online sportsbook, with markets updated daily.
Manager - Frank de Boer Captain - Gini Wijnaldum Star Player - Memphis Depay Best Euro Finish - Winners (1988)
The Netherlands seem to be going through a period similar to that of Belgium in tournaments past. The potential that their squad has as a whole is incredible, but Euro 2020 might just come too soon for some of their stars. Matias De Ligt, Frenkie De Jong, Ryan Gravenberch and Donyell Malen are all incredible young talents, but do they have the quality to lead their nation? They’ll be backed up by the likes of Stefan de Vrij, Gini Wijnaldum and Memphis Depay, but this tournament might end up being more of an experience builder than anything else for the Dutch. Having Virgil van Dijk at the back might have changed that, but his loss will be felt. Regardless, the Netherlands should have no issue winning Group C and will likely be one of the most entertaining teams at the tournament.
Manager - Franco Foda Captain - Julian Baumgartlinger Star Player - David Alaba Best Euro Finish - Group Stage (2008, 2016)
Austria have never made it out of the Group Stage at a European Championship, but it’s been a long time since they’ve had a squad that can rival their current one. There’s quality littered throughout this team, with European heavyweights like David Alaba and Marcel Sabitzer supported by a solid supporting cast. The majority of Austria’s squad ply their trade in the Bundesliga, so expect a hardworking team that can match up to some of the better sides at the tournament defensively. Ex-West Ham man Marko Arnautovic will likely lead the line, and if his time in the Premier League is anything to go by, then there could always be something spectacular waiting around the corner for Austria.
Manager - Andriy Shevchenko Captain - Andriy Pyatov Star Player - Andriy Yarmolenko Best Euro Finish - Group Stage (2012, 2016)
Ukraine have named one of the younger squads at Euro 2020, with an average age of just under 26. That’s unlike Ukraine’s squads at most recent tournaments, as they have traditionally relied on seasoned professionals rather than youth. But, it seems as though Ukraine are actively trying to bleed through a new generation of talent at Euro 2020. That, of course, can work wonders, or it could massively backfire. For Ukraine, the risk will be more than worth it. If their young stars impress, they have an outside chance of making the knockout rounds and they’ll have a solid platform for future tournaments. If they fail, then at least their younger players will get plenty of experience at this level. Ukraine will be an interesting team to watch, and Shevchenko’s team choices might be one to keep an eye on.
Manager - Igor Angelovski Captain - Goran Pandev Star Player - Goran Pandev Best Euro Finish - First Appearance in 2021
North Macedonia are probably the side that the average football fan will know the least about. This is their first appearance at any major national tournament, but their inclusion is fully deserved. Many fans might remember a 2-1 away win at Germany back in March, led by veteran Goran Pandev. At 37, Pandev will finally get the chance to lead his country out at a major tournament. Supporting him is a mainly unknown squad, with Ezgjan Alioski of Leeds the only instantly recognizable name. We mentioned Finland hoping for an Iceland style run in our Group B preview, but it might be more apt to compare North Macedonia to Iceland. This is a squad that clearly knows how to play well together, and will massively play to their own strengths regardless of opponent. Although they’ll likely not earn a point here, they could be the underdog story of the tournament if they play their cards right.
