Manager - Roberto Martinez Captain - Eden Hazard Star Player - Kevin De Bruyne Best Euro Finish - Runners Up (1980)
After a 3rd place finish at World Cup 2018, it’s fair to say that Belgium have eclipsed ‘Dark Horse’ status and are now fully expected to reach the latter stages of Euro 2020. The Belgian squad is experiencing a true golden generation with quality throughout the pitch, and this might be their best opportunity to win a major tournament. It can be argued that Belgium’s defence and midfield isn’t the strongest outside of the starting XI, but it’s rare that Roberto Martinez will dip below his preferred first team. As long as they remain fit, then Belgium should have no issues winning Group B and setting up a nice run to the semi-finals.
Manager - Kasper Hjulmand Captain - Kasper Schmeichel Star Player - Christian Eriksen Best Euro Finish - Winners (1992)
Denmark will definitely fancy themselves to finish 2nd in Group B, behind Belgium. The Danish side seems to always have some strong names in there, including Christian Eriksen, Thomas Delaney, Pierre Emile Holjberg and Andreas Christensen. But, like a few countries at Euro 2020, their biggest weakness is going forward. They still don’t have an out and out, recognisable striker that can successfully lead the line. Yussef Poulsen, Martin Braithwaite and Kasper Doljberg will all likely be given a chance to claim the number 9 spot, but none of them can boast 10 international goals. Thankfully, a very strong midfield does back them up, and with Kasper Schmeichel as a last line of defence, Denmark will always be a deceptively tough side to break down.
Manager - Stanislav Cherchesov Captain - Artem Dzyuba Star Player - Denis Cheryshev Best Euro Finish - Semi Finals (2008)
Russia shocked everyone with a string of impressive performances as they hosted the World Cup in 2018. But, it’s highly unlikely that they repeat such feats this summer. Russia has an ageing squad that has mostly remained the same for the last few international tournaments. Artem Dzyuba will likely lead the line at 32, Denis Cheryshev is 30 and their starting back four could also all be over 30 years old. With no real emerging young talent, it might be difficult for Russia to perform strongly as this tournament goes on. Alexander Golovin might have proved to be that world-class youngster, but a move to Monaco after 2018 massively backfired and his development has been less than ideal. An outside chance of qualifying as a 3rd place team is likely all that’s expected for Russia.
Manager - Markku Kanerva Captain - Tim Sparv Star Player - Teemu Pukki Best Euro Finish - First Appearance in 2021
Along with North Macedonia in Group C, Finland are one of two sides making their first appearance at a European Championship this summer. Unsurprisingly, that makes them massive outsiders to qualify from Group B. There are some recognisable names in the Finnish squad, including Bayer Leverkusen keeper Lukas Hradecky, Norwich striker Teemu Pukki and European journeyman Tim Sparv. But, there just isn’t enough quality in this side for Finland to be considered a threat. The majority of their squad play in second divisions or in lesser European leagues like Cyprus and Sweden. Unless there is some kind of Icelandic miracle of 2016, Finland will likely just be here to enjoy the ride.
