How Egypt Prepared For The AFCON

In two pre tournament friendlies, Egypt beat both Tanzania and Guinea. Against Tanzania, Egypt fielded a slightly weakened team, without their best players. Mo Salah and Mohamed Elneny both sat on the bench. Salah was likely excluded after his Champions League run with Liverpool as they tried to give him as much rest as possible ahead of the AFCON. Regardless of their weakened side, a 64th minute goal from captain Ahmed El Mohamady gave them a 1-0 win ahead of their goal against Guinea. Guinea have also qualified for the AFCON, so it provided more of a test than the Tanzania game. Again, Mo Salah was left on the bench but was introduced on 61 minutes with his side 1 goal to the good. Just 2 minutes later, Guinea were level, but Egypt scored again with 10 minutes to go. Salah finally contributed with 5 minutes left, gifting an assist to Omar Gaber to secure a 3-1 win. As hosts, Egypt will be expected to do well in this years African Cup Of Nations and 2 wins out of 2 is a good way to start.

How Zimbabwe Prepared For The AFCON

Understandably, Zimbabwe are one of the most unknown teams coming into the 2019 AFCON. This is only the third time that they have qualified for the tournament and the average football fan would be hard pressed to name a single player from their squad. But as we have said, a smaller nation normally have a long run in this tournament and it could be Zimbabwe this year. Ahead of the AFCON, Zimbabwe played away at Nigeria and Tanzania in two friendlies. Zimbabwe held their own against Nigeria and came away with a 0-0 draw. This was a full strength Nigeria side that saw John Obi Mikel, Alex Iwobi, Ahmed Musa and Henry Onyekuru all feature at some point. Defence could be a strong point of Zimbabwe as they look to frustrate sides at any opportunity. Against Tanzania, Zimbabwe took the lead in the first half before conceding an equaliser after the break. Again, they still only conceded one goal and arguably should have won. For a smaller nation with no stars, Zimbabwe will need all their heart to get a positive start to the 2019 AFCON.

Where’s The Value Bet?

There’s no doubt that Egypt are the favourites for this game. In fact, they are the outright favourites for the whole tournament and are expected to use their home advantage. With Egypt heavy favourites, we’ll look for a way to take advantage of that and increase our odds. As it’s the first game of the tournament, Egypt are likely to come out all guns blazing to try and get off to a perfect start. So we can expect an early goal, meaning they should go into the break in front. Just like Guinea in their last friendly, a couple of goals after the break should give them the 3 points to open up. So, we can look at the HT/FT markets and combine that with over 2.5 goals. At odds of 6/4, it’s a lot more attractive than 20/67 for Egypt to win by itself.
