Copa America Group C Preview

Copa America Group C Betting Preview

Group C is probably the easiest of the groups to predict but also have 2 of the most intriguing teams of the tournament. In Japan, an honourary Copa Amercias entrant, we have a young squad who is entering a new era. With Chile, it’s the opposite way around, as the old guard is unable to rest as a new generation seems far away. Uruguay are the runaway favourites and Ecuador are unlikely to qualify from a tough group.

Uruguay - 25/4 To Win

Manager - Oscar Tabarez
Star Player - Luis Suarez
World Ranking - 6th
Best Copa America Performance - Winners (1916, 1917, 1920, 1923, 1924, 1926, 1935, 1942, 1956, 1959, 1967, 1983, 1987, 1995, 2011)

Summary

Uruguay are the most successful team in Copa America history, but have only won one tournament in the last 24 years. Uruguay play with their two most prolific strikers of all time in Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani. A front two that can only be rivalled by Argentina’s Leo Messi and Sergio Aguero. Behind them is a typical tough Uruguay side, including Lucas Torrerira, Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez. It’s strong, experienced spine to the Uruguay side that should see them to at least the semi finals. They are currently 3rd favourites at 25/4, just behind Brazil and Argentina.

Ecuador - 40/1 To Win

Manager - Hernan Dario Gomez
Star Player - Antonio Valencia
World Ranking - 59th
Best Copa America Performance - Fourth Place (1959, 1993)

Summary

Ecuador are another aging side with few names that would be recognised by English fans. Antonio Valencia is the obvious stand out name for Ecuador, who captains his country after collecting 96 caps. Enner Valencia is another familiar name after spending 3 uneventful years at West Ham and Everton. All but 5 of their 23 man squad play in South America, with perhaps leads to a lack of quality when compared to the star studded line ups of Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. Their Copa America record doesn’t spark much hope either. They have only made it out of the group stages twice since a 4th place finish in 1993.

Japan - 70/1 To Win

Manager - Hajime Moriyasu
Star Player - Shinji Okazaki
World Ranking - 26th
Best Copa America Performance - Group Stage (1999)

Summary

It might look like Japan’s odds of 70/1 are big compared to some of the other nations, but it makes sense when looking at the Japan squad. 16 of their 23 man squad has never been capped by their country, and the whole squad has an average age of just 22. There are just 4 players with over 10 caps and Japan are clearly viewing this tournament as a transitional one. Shinji Okazaki is the only instantly recognisable name, although he is hardly a prolific striker at 33. Even if they are admitting defeat, it could be a chance for a breakthrough star. Japan will be worth keeping an eye on just in case that one youngster starts to perform.

Chile - 11/1 To Win

Manager - Reinaldo Rueda
Star Player - Arturo Vidal
World Ranking - 15th
Best Copa America Performance - Winners (2015, 2016)

Summary

The winners of the last 2 Copa Americas come into the 2019 tournament as slight underdogs after a few years of underperforming. In 2015 and 2016, Chile were deserving winners, beating Argentina in consecutive finals for their first Copa America wins. But since then, their core has grown older and there isn’t a fresh batch of stars to replace them. Players like Jean Beausejour, Mauricio Isla and Eduardo Vargas have been a staple of this side for years. But they have all went from playing in Europe’s top league to South American obscurity. Even Alexis Sanchez is a shadow of the player he was in 2016. It will be tough for Chile to get back to how strong they were back then, but they should still make it out of a poor group.
