Copa America Group B Preview

Copa America Group B Betting Preview

Copa America’s Group B has two of the pre tournament favourites and also features some of the biggest names in world football. Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, James Rodriguez and Radamel Falcao all feature in Group B and will face each other in the opening match on June 15th. This is also the group that welcomes Qatar for their debut Copa America appearance, as the country looks to integrate itself into the international scene ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

Argentina - 33/10 To Win

Manager - Lionel Scaloni
Star Player - Lionel Messi
World Ranking - 11th
Best Copa America Performance - Winners (1921, 1925, 1927, 1929, 1937, 1941, 1945, 1946, 1947, 1955, 1957, 1959, 1991, 1993)

Summary

Argentina are 10/13 favourites to win Group B and looking at their squad, it’s tough to look past them. Their 5 strikers scored 109 goals between them last season, including 51 in 50 games from Leo Messi. Messi will want to finally bring Argentina a trophy after losing 3 international finals since 2014. Despite their incredible squad, Argentina consistently struggle on the international stage and are without a trophy since 1993. With a younger midfield coming through the ranks, this could be the year that things start to turn around for Argentina. Regardless of how the rest of the squad perform, the key to success is getting the most out of Messi. If he plays as well as he can, Argentina could go all the way.

Colombia - 17/2 To Win

Manager - Carlos Queiroz
Star Player - James Rodriguez
World Ranking - 8th
Best Copa America Performance - Winners (2001)

Summary

Since losing to England in last summer's World Cup, Colombia have lost just once in 8 games. That includes a draw against Group B opponents Argentina, so there is reason to be hopeful for Colombia. Their star core of James Rodriguez, Radamel Falcao and Yerry Mina aren’t coming into the tournament in strong form, but it will be the supporting cast that will bring success. Duvan Zapata has just finished the best year of his career in Atlanta with 28 goals. Jefferson Lerma impressed for Bournemouth last year and Davinson Sanchez is still a promising centre half. It’s these types of players who will need to step up and command their place in Carlos Queiroz’s starting XI.

Paraguay - 33/1 To Win

Manager - Eduardo Berizzo
Star Player - Miguel Almiron
World Ranking - 36th
Best Copa America Performance - Winners (1953, 1979)

Summary

Paraguay are led by two Premier League stars in Newcastle’s Miguel Almiron and West Ham’s Fabian Balbuena. Almiron will feel the pressure the most as he will be expected to create most of the chances as well as remaining a goal threat. He’s returning from injury but will need to be at his best if Paraguay are to advance. In the past, Oscar Cardozo has led the line for Paraguay but at 36 years old, it’s tough to see him having much of an impact. It will be tough for Paraguay to advance out of the group after a tough draw against Argentina and Colombia. But, after reaching the knockout stages in all but one tournament since 1991, we can’t rule them out completely.

Qatar - 90/1 To Win

Manager - Felix Sanchez Bas
Star Player - Hassan Al-Haydos
World Ranking - 55th
Best Copa America Performance - First Appearance in 2019

Summary

Qatar are the complete unknown of this tournament, but we will have to get used to seeing them. They are set to host the 2021 Confederations Cup as well as the 2022 World Cup. All 23 of their players play in the Qatar Stars League, so it’s unlikely that there will be any recognisable names. Hassan Al-Haydos has the chance to become Qatar’s most capped player in this tournament and will be the main threat with 26 international goals. By national ranking, Qatar aren’t the worst side in this tournament. In fact, they’ve already won the AFC Asian Cup back in January, beating South Korea and Japan along the way. Obviously, the Copa America is a step up in class but they will be worth a watch to see how they can fare in the next World Cup.
