Champions League Group F Betting Preview

Champions League Group F Betting Preview

Manchester City come into the Champions League as favourites, despite their struggles in Europe in recent years. They have been handed a favourable Group F draw, alongside Lyon, Shakhtar Donetsk and Hoffenheim, but there is still a chance that the Citizens can slip up. Heading into the first round of matches, City are likely to be without Aguero and De Bruyne. If Guardiola is to cement his place as an all time great manager, then he will be looking for Champions League success above all other this season. We have gathered Champions League betting tips and odds for Group F, as well as a factfile on all 4 teams.

Bet UK’s Boost for tonight’s fixtures is Bayern Munich, Juventus and Man United to win at 4/1*, boosted from 7/2.

Manchester City - 9/2* Favourites to Win The Champions League

How They Qualified

Manchester City have been Champions League regulars since their 2008 takeover took the club to another level. Last year, the Citizens took the Premier League by storm, bagging 100 points and scoring 106 goals throughout the season. Pep Guardiola’s possession based system finally started to work in England, after he was criticised during his first year in charge. Kevin De Bruyne, Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling all improved, arguably making City the greatest Premier League team of all time.

Best Champions League Campaign

Manchester City might have dominated English football in recent years, but they are still yet to conquer Europe. They came closest in 2015/16, when they reached the Champions League semi finals. After winning a group consisting of Juventus, Sevilla and Borussia Monchengladbach, City beat Dynamo Kiev and PSG on their route to the semi’s. They faced Real Madrid, the eventual winners of the competition, only losing to a Fernando own goal in the second leg.

Star Player

Sergio Aguero - It’s hard to select a single player as Manchester City’s main man. Sergio Aguero is City’s all time top scorer however and is showing no signs of slowing down. The Argentine has consistently scored over 28 goals per year for the last 5 years, despite often being sidelined with injury worries. If City are going to progress further than recent years in the Champions League, they will need Aguero to perform again.

Bet UK’s online sportsbook has betting odds of 8/1* for Sergio Aguero to be Champions League top scorer.

Lyon - 125/1* to Win The Champions League

How They Qualified

Lyon are slowly getting back to the top of French football after a much improved 17/18 season. Memphis Depay, Nabil Fekir and Mariano Diaz took Lyon back up to 3rd place in Ligue 1, just 1 point behind Monaco. Lyon secured their Champions League qualification with a 3-2 win over Nice, Depay scoring a hattrick to win the game. Fekir, Depay and Diaz were all linked with summer moves, although Diaz was the only departure. Despite Fekir allegedly having a medical at Anfield during the summer break, he remains at Lyon and will be hoping to impress again this season.

Best Champions League Campaign

In 2009/10, Lyon experienced their strongest run in the Champions League. Originally drawn in Group E, alongside Fiorentina, Liverpool and Debrecen, Lyon defied the odds and finished second, ahead of Liverpool. The second place finish put Lyon in a weaker position for the round of 16, where they face Real Madrid. Jean Makoun scored in the first leg, before a late Miralem Pjanic sent Lyon through with a 2-1 win. Lyon were then drawn against Bordeaux, who they dispatched with ease. Bayern Munich proved to be a step too far however, with the German side winning 4-0 in the Semi Finals.

Lyon to win Group F is 8/1* with Bet UK’s sports betting feature.

Star Player

Memphis Depay - Manchester United fans might remember Depay as a showboater with no end product, but at Lyon, his game has developed into a huge talent. Depay is mainly deployed as a main striker at Lyon and scored 22 goals in all competitions last season. Ultimately, his move to Manchester came too soon, but now he has been given the chance too shine, he has taken the opportunity with both hands.

Shakhtar Donetsk - 175/1* to Win The Champions League

How They Qualified

Shakhtar dominated the Ukranian league again in 17/18. The league was a 2 horse race between Shakhtar and Dynamo Kiev, however Shakhtar were top of the table for 26 weeks of the season. Kiev only finished 2 points behind the leaders, but were still relying on the Ukranian giants slipping up. Shakhtar have form in European competitions in the past. They often advance out of the group stage and are known to cause a shock at some point. They even hold the record for the biggest away win in the Champions League, winning 7-0 at BATE Borisov in 2014.

Shahktar Donestsk are 2/1* to qualify from Group F with Bet UK’s sports betting.

Best Champions League Campaign

2010/11 was the highlight of Shakhtar Donetsk’s Champions League career. They reached their further point in the tournament, making the quarter finals before losing to Barcelona. They finished top of their group for the first time in their history, ahead of Braga, Partizan and Arsenal. Winning both legs against Roma in the round of 16 was another sign that Shakhtar were a serious threat. A team featuring Willian, Douglas Costa and Mkhitaryan then faced Barcelona in the quarter finals. They were eventually defeated 6-1 over 2 legs, but they never truly stood a chance against Guardiola’s Barcelona.

Star Player

Marlos - Right winger Marlos was Shakhtar’s second top scorer last season, behind the now departed Facundo Ferreyra. 22 goals in just 41 games is an impressive record for a winger, who turned 30 at the end of the year. After playing in Ukraine for 6 years, first at Metalist Kharkiv and now at Shakhtar, Marlos now has a Ukrainian citizenship and has represented his new nation on 7 occasions.

Hoffenheim - 250/1* to Win The Champions League

How They Qualified

Under Julian Nagelsmann’s tutelage, Hoffenheim finished 3rd in the Bundesliga last year on goal difference. Hoffenheim, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen all finished with the exact same wins, draw, and losses, with only 4 goals separating the 3 sides. Hoffenheim were unlucky not to be in the Champions League group stage last year. The German side were drawn against Liverpool in the play-off round and were easily beaten over the 2 legs. They didn’t fare well in the Europa League, which might have helped out in their Bundesliga campaign.

Best Champions League Campaign

The 18/19 season will be Hoffenheim’s first entry into the Champions League group stage. It will only be their second attempt at a European campaign at all, after last season’s Europa League. Hoffenheim’s sudden rise to the top of German football has been less publicised than that of RB Leipzig. The club only turned professional 11 years ago, which makes their Champions League campaign even more impressive.

Bet UK’s online sportsbook has odds of 2/5* for Hoffenheim not to qualify from Group F.

Star Player

Andrej Kramaric - After a 2018 World Cup campaign to remember, Andrej Kramaric returns to Hoffenheim hoping to carry on his good form. His 13 goals last season were overshadowed by Mark Uth, but his contribution was just as strong. Signed by Leicester City in 2015, he failed to make enough appearances during the 15/16 season to earn a Premier League winners medal. He joined Hoffenheim on loan in January 2016, eventually joining permanently in the summer.
