Champions League Betting Tips
We’ve reached the first round of 16 fixtures in this season’s Champions League, and there’s plenty of mouthwatering fixtures to look forward to. The best of the best take on each other and the only issue is that there’ll be some strong sides missing out on the quarter-finals. Atletico Madrid v Chelsea - 20:00, Tuesday 23rd February
Tactically, this is by far the most intriguing battle of the round of 16. A Diego Simeone led Atletico Madrid are infamously tricky to breakdown. Despite a recent lack of clean sheets, Atletico will undoubtedly step up their game in Europe, hoping to reach the quarter-finals once again. Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea are the side in their way, who have improved since sacking Frank Lampard. Defensively, Chelsea are a lot more sound than they were at the end of Lampard’s reign. Whilst they still aren’t as fluid as they would like to be going forward, their solid defence will give Tuchel confidence. We can’t see many goals in this one, but instead, expect a fascinating tactical battle.
Lazio v Bayern Munich - 20:00, Tuesday 23rd February
Lazio come into the round of 16 unbeaten in the group stage, although they benefited from quite a weak group. Outside of Borussia Dortmund, Lazio only faced Club Brugge and Zenit St Petersburg. An unbeaten record is always impressive, but just two wins from 6 in that group could have been improved upon. We can’t expect their unbeaten record to extend into the round of 16 as Lazio take on Bayern Munich. Bayern have been on a slight downward turn following their Club World Cup win. Most recently, they were beaten by Eintracht Frankfurt and have looked tired in their last two games. However, Bayern have a real chance of back to back Champions League. They should be energised for this trip and we can see them killing the tie early on.
Atalanta v Real Madrid - 20:00, Wednesday 24th February
Atalanta have quickly become one of the most exciting teams to watch in Europe over the last couple of years. They score plenty of goals, and have a leaky defence, which leads to rarely boring games. At this stage, Atalanta beat Valencia 8-4 on aggregate and we’ve got our fingers crossed for a tie that’s just as entertaining. With a full-strength Real Madrid side, that might be possible, but injuries have ravaged them. At least 7 of their ideal starting 11 are missing coming into this game. Because of that, we are backing Atalanta to shock Real Madrid and take a lead to the Bernabeu in the second leg.
Borussia Monchengladbach v Manchester City - 20:00, Wednesday 24th February
Borussia Monchengladbach have reached the Champions League round of 16 for the first time in their three attempts. They came out of arguably the group of death after being drawn alongside Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk. But they’ve been given an even tougher draw in the knockout stages. In all competitions, Manchester City have won 18 games in a row and look completely unstoppable. Remarkably, Kevin De Bruyne has been missing for a large portion of that run. Ilkay Gundogan is also back after an injury scare and City are almost at full strength. Everything points to City dominating this one, and we think it could be a baptism by fire for Monchengladbach.
