Reading, Norwich and Birmingham All To Win @ 23/4

Reading v Colchester United - 15:00, Saturday 5th September

Reading come into this season looking for a new start under manager Veljko Paunovic, who was hired after Mark Bowen was surprisingly dismissed. Last season they finished 14th, but were never really in danger of falling into League One. The majority of the squad was kept on over the summer, with Ovie Ejaria brought in on a permanent basis alongside midfielder Josh Laurent. They’ll face Colchester United on Saturday, with the League Two side still reeling from their Play Off semi final defeat in the summer. As with most clubs in the lower leagues, a lot of departures were followed by few incomings as money becomes tighter and tighter. Seeing as this is the first game of the season, pre-season form has to come into play and it’s hardly been impressive for Colchester. They lost 5 in a row before a win against non-league Wealdstone, so Reading will be confident of pulling off a result in the 1st round.

Luton Town v Norwich City - 15:00, Saturday 5th September

One of the few all Championship ties in the 1st round is Luton v Norwich. Luton’s end of season form pulled them away from a tight relegation battle, with Championship football once again on the card for the Hatters. 3 new players have joined Luton, but there should still be a huge gulf in class between these sides on Saturday. For Norwich, it’s been a busy summer so far. No notable players have left Carrow Road, with Teemu Pukki, Todd Cantwell and Max Aarons still all on the books. If anything, Norwich have strengthened since their Championship winning campaign two years ago. Jordan Hugill has joined from West Ham, adding to an already frightening front line. 7 new signings give Norwich even more options as they look to get back in the Premier League. Even if the Carabao Cup isn’t a main focus for Daniel Farke, he’ll be desperate to get his squad off to a strong start this season.

Birmingham City v Cambridge United - 15:00, Saturday 5th September

There was a worry that Birmingham City’s summer was going to revolve around Jude Bellingham, but with his transfer confirmed early on, Birmingham have had plenty of time to prepare. Although they received upwards of £30m for that deal, they haven’t splashed the cash. Adam Clayton’s transfer from Middlesbrough is the only signing that has cost money, but Birmingham can still push on from last season. Aitor Karanka now has a full summer and season to input his ideas on the squad. After his stint with Middlesbrough, Birmingham fans will be hoping he can get the best out of an experienced side. They’ll start their campaign against Cambridge United, who have seen a lot of ins and outs this summer. 7 players have been brought in, with 12 departing as Cambridge look to force their way out of League Two. As with most sides that see this kind of change, there will likely be a period of gelling together that could see Cambridge struggle. Birmingham should more than take advantage of the poor early season form.
