African Cup of Nations Betting Preview

African Cup Of Nations Betting Preview

The African Cup Of Nations is one of the most popular tournaments to look forward to, with cult heroes and small names often making the most of the big stage. In the past 4 tournaments, we have seen Zambia beat Ivory Coast in the final, Burkina Faso finish 2nd and 3rd, and Equatorial Guinea finishing 4th, so there is definitely potential for a shock in 2019. We’ve taken a quick look at each of the 6 groups in the 2019 African Cup Of Nations, as well as our outright betting tip for the whole tournament.

Group A

Group A Teams - Egypt, DR Congo, Uganda and Zimbabwe

Group A sees the hosts Egypt go up against DR Congo, Uganda and Zimbabwe. It’s clear that Egypt have more experience and quality than the rest of the group. Led by Mo Salah, they can boast experience in attack, midfield and defence and the hosts should get off to a strong start. Elsewhere, DR Congo have a couple of stars that could see them finish second. Ex Newcastle man Chancel Mbemba and Yannick Bolasie are both from Congo and will be the main players for their group. Uganda and Zimbabwe will likely to battling it out to see who doesn’t finish last. It’s tough to see either side getting through to the knockout stages, even as one of the best third place sides.

Group A Winner - Egypt - 2/5
Group A Full Prediction - 1st Egypt, 2nd DR Congo, 3rd Zimbabwe, 4th Uganda

Group B

Group B Teams - Burundi, Guinea, Madagascar and Nigeria

One of the weaker groups in the competition, Group B will be dominated by Nigeria. Nigeria have players with title winning and Champions League experience, something not many squads can match in the AFCON. Guinea can though, with Naby Kieta their star player. Ibrahima Traore of Borussia Monchengladbach and Ibrahima Cisse are the only other recognisable names from Guinea. Burundi and Madagascar are two of the outsiders for the tournament and are both competing in their first ever AFCON.

Group B Winner - Nigeria - 10/19
Group B Full Prediction - 1st Nigeria, 2nd Guinea, 3rd Burundi, 4th Madagascar

Group C

Group C Teams - Algeria, Kenya, Senegal, Tanzania

Senegal and Algeria are two evenly matched sides that could realistically both win the group and go deep in this competition. Senegal have two of the best players in the whole tournament in Sadio Mane and Kalidou Koulibaly, a duo who are easily worth over £200 between them. Algeria are quite underrated in the market at 14/1 to win the AFCON. Going forward, they have Riyad Mahrez, Yaccine Brahimi, Islam Slimani and Sofiane Feghouli. In terms of the AFCON, few nations can defend against those 4. Kenya will be hoping Victor Wanyama can play as a complete midfielder, whilst Tanzania will be hoping for a miracle to even grab a point in the group.

Group C Winner - Senegal - 5/8
Group C Full Prediction - 1st Senegal, 2nd Algeria, 3rd Kenya, 4th Tanzania

Group D

Group D Teams - Ivory Coast, Morocco, Namibia, South Africa

Like group C, group D has 2 sides who could realistically win the whole tournament. Ivory Coast have consistently impressed at international tournaments, both in the World Cup and in the AFCON. Nicolas Pepe, Maxwell Cornet and Wilfried Zaha provide a dynamic front line that could single handedly win the tournament if they can get on the same page. They might have disappointed last summer, but with manager Herve Renard then Morocco could impress. South Africa are slight outsiders at 28/1 to win the AFCON and should be in with a shout of qualifying as one of the best third place sides. Namibia will likely be the whipping boys of this group and will finish bottom.

Group D Winner - Ivory Coast - 1/1
Group D Full Prediction - 1st Ivory Coast, 2nd Morocco, 3rd South Africa, 4th Namibia

Group E

Group E Teams - Angola, Mali, Mauritania, Tunisia

England fans will know all about Tunisia after facing them last summer. Apart from their win against Panama, they looked poor and although they are the favourites for the group, I can’t discount Mali. Mali have a surprising amount of recognisable, top flight names that I think make them the best choice for Group E. Moussa Marega, Lassana Coulibaly and Molla Wague all line up for Mali and if they can avoid defeat against Tunisia, then first place should be theres. Although entirely unrecognisable, Angola and Mauritania aren’t rated as poorly as some other teams in the tournament, both price at 100/1 to win the AFCON.

Group E Winner - Mali - 11/10
Group E Full Prediction - Mali, Tunisia, Angola, Mauritania

Group F

Group F Teams - Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau

2 of Africa’s traditionally biggest sides face each other in Group F. Cameroon and Ghana have both had huge success in recent World Cup’s and at some point have each boasted one of the worlds best players. Although neither are as strong this year, they will have 1st and 2nd locked up. I expect Ghana to edge the group thanks to their mix of young players and experience. Thomas Partey, Christian Atsu and the Ayew brothers will all be in the starting line up as they look to win their first AFCON since 1982. Benin and Guinea-Bissau are both poor squads with very shallow squads, so don’t expect any shocks from them.

Group F Winner - Ghana - 13/10
Group F Full Prediction - Ghana, Cameroon, Benin, Guinea-Bissau

African Cup Of Nations Outright Betting Tip

AFCON Winners - Senegal - 6/1

Senegal are one of the few sides that can claim to have 2 genuinely world class players that could get into any team in the world. Alongside Mane and Koulibaly, the supporting cast of Idrissa Gueye, Keita Balde and Salif Sane amongst others should have enough quality to win the whole tournament.
