Genzon Golf Club, Shenzen, China. Par 72: 7,145 Yards
The European Tour players are back on the plane again and once more heading out East to China, and the 24th staging of the Volvo China Open. Two hours drive from Hong Kong, and on the outskirts on Shenzen, the Genzon Golf Club, redesigned in 2008 by Canadian Neil Howarth, is an open parkland course built around the shores of the imposing, although not often in play, Dragon Lake.
With generous, undulating, fairways and small but largely unprotected greens, with minimal bunkering, scores are often amongst the lowest on tour. The key competencies that players will need to excel in this week are long driving and good putting. Genzon has only hosted this event once previously, when Frenchman Alexander Levy claimed a 4 stroke win (the first of two success in the last 5 years). from Englishman Tommy Fleetwood on -19 back in 2014.
Last Five Winners:
2018: Alexander Bjork -18
2017: Alexander Levy -17
2016: Li Haotong -22
2015: Ashun Wu -9
2013: Alexander Levy -19
The Market Leaders
A local favourite and an in form American sit atop the betting markets this week with Haotong Li (11/1) and Julian Seri (14/1). Both can lay similarly strong claims to content with Seri backing up a recent 4th placed finish with a second last week and in strong form. He also hits the ball a long way, and it would be no surprise to see him contend if he can acclimatise to the conditions in China following his trip from last week’s event in Morocco. Li however did not play last week, and has stuttered somewhat after some strong early season form. He does, however have a previous 2nd to his name at this event back in 2015 at the 2015 Shenzen Open where he was defeated in a playoff by Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat. He is however hard to support at the price.
Other contenders include last week’s winner, Spaniard Jorge Campillo (16/1), and England’s Jordan Smith (16/1) who led early last week only to fall away and post an eventual finish of 14th. He is however in good form, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he contended. He is surely going to take his maiden Tour title soon.
This week’s headline tip goes the way that last weeks should have, and that is to a 32 year old Spaniard who is chasing their maiden European Tour victory. Lots of factors pointed to Campillo last week, and it was a disappointment for us not to have been on. We can, however, back his countryman to follow in his footsteps and post his maiden Tour victory in China at a rather enticing price of 30/1*.
Elvira has been rapidly improving of late with two second places proceeding his missed cut and weekend off in Morocco last week on a course where really anything can happen, and I don't see this as a detracting factor to us backing him this week. Elvira is long, and has a rock solid short game, and those factors should see him in very good shape this. There is also the added bonus that he has played this course three times, never finishing outside the top 25, with a highest placed finish of 8th, so there are no demons to Elvira at Genzon and I recommend a strong stake of 4 points e/w at 30/1*.
The second pick this week goes to big-hitting South African Christian Bezuidenhout. Although this is his first appearance at Genzon, the course should be ideally suited to his game, and that game is currently in very good shape having posted three top 190 finishes in his last 5 starts, as well as a solid 14th last week in Morocco. Bezuidenhout fits the bill of a long, straight hitter who, if the putter is working, could well make a large number of birdies and overpower this track. Although at 24, he hasn’t the experience of some out here, he is worth an interest this week in what is a relatively weak field. I suggest 2 Points e/w at 30/1*.
If ever a course was made for a player, you would think that it was Genzon for Nicholas Colsaerts. That, however, hasn’t been the case to date with two missed cuts from his four appearances here. Added to that, his form has been unspectacular of late, and we can see why he is 100/1, whereby with equal current, and no course, form, he would expect to go off single figures. It does need something of a perfect storm, but if Colsaerts can right both of those this week, it would be no surprise to see him land the title, effectively out of nowhere. He has quietly made 7 of his last 8 cuts, and has included an 8th place finish amongst those starts, and is likely to give us a run for our money this week. [1 Point e/w at 100/1](/betting/golf/volvo-china-open/).
Another that could well feature this week is Scotland’s Richie Ramsay. Ramsay is another who has been in the doldrums, but that has shown recent flashes of form, and he unlike Colsaerts, does boast some quite impressive form at this venue. In his four appearances here he has posted finishes of 32,11,24 & was 21st last year. A few years back, Ramsay was another who would regularly contend on Tour, and he will be keen to revisit those days, and this field and the familiar venue provides him with the perfect platform to do so. 1 Point e/w at 100/1*.
