Super League is the top professional rugby football league club competition in Europe. The league currently has fourteen teams competing: 12 from England, one from France and one from Wales. The league starts in February and is completed in October with the Grand Final.
The Catalans Dragons of France entered the competition in 2006 and in 2009 they were joined by Celtic Crusaders of Wales. The league was intended to be European despite all of the teams being from England since 1998, when Paris Saint Germain left the league.
Super League began in 1996 and is now in its 15h season. The fourteen teams will compete for the Minor Premiership over 27 matches, including the “Magic Weekend” at Murrayfield, Edinburgh. The top eight teams at the end of the season qualify for the Play-offs and are whittled down eventually to the final two. The Grand Final is played at Old Trafford, Manchester.
The play-off structure is designed to reward the teams that finish near the top of the league in the regular season. From 2009 the winning team from week one of the qualifying play-offs with the highest regular season ranking is allowed to choose which team it plays in week three. In week two, the losers of the week one qualifying play-off games get another chance against a lower ranked side that won the elimination play-off in week one. In essence, the top ranked sides that win in week one of the play-offs get a by to the semi-finals.
Betting on Super League XV is offered by all major bookmakers in the UK and it is possible to bet on the season outcome, all regular season games and who will win the Grand Final.
So early in the season it is hard to tell who is looking good for the title. Last seasons stand out sides Leeds Rhinos and St Helens are currently the bookies favourites to win the regular season. Leeds are best priced 6/4, reflecting their dominance of Super League XIV. Leeds Rhinos have won the last three Grand Finals, beating St Helens on every occasion.
