The 2010 Australian National Rugby League season will be the 103rd season of professional Rugby Football League to be held in Australia. It will also be the 13th season run by the NRL.
This season starts March 12th and will be contested between sixteen teams. The Grand Final ends the season on October 3rd at the ANZ stadium. The Grand Final is the match used to decide the winner of the season but teams also compete for the minor premiership title.
Of the sixteen teams in the 2010 NRL season, ten are from New South Wales, three from Queensland and one each from Victoria, Australian Capital Territory and New Zealand.
The structure of the league is unknown to many people in the UK and is also an unusual system. By the end of the regular season each team plays 24 games. The following explanation shows how this total is reached: Teams are divided into two pools of eight at the completion of each season, with each pool of equal strength based on that season’s results. During the course of the regular season each club plays a total of two games against the other teams in the opposite pool, once at their home stadium and once at that of their opponent’s for a total of sixteen games for each club. Teams play six of the seven other teams in their own pool just once during the season, and play the remaining club twice. This results in each team playing 24 games, with two byes in the 26-week regular season.
The most successful teams in the NRL are Melbourne Storm and Brisbane Broncos with three Grand Final successes each, Melbourne Storm have also won three regular season titles. The 2007 season is the only season where Melbourne Storm won both the regular season and Grand Final.
Bookmakers in the UK offer prices on the Grand Final winner and regular season outcome (known as the Minor Premiers). Current favourites for Grand Final glory are Parramatta Eels and Melbourne Storm, both are best priced 6/1. Current leading players for the Minor Premiers are the Bulldogs and Parramatta at 6/1 and 5/1 respectively.
