The Greek Super League is the top league in Greek football, and it has a structure very different from other European leagues. There are sixteen teams in the division, with the bottom three each year being relegated to the Beta Ethniki. There are two Champions League spots awarded to the Super League, with the winner of the title automatically taking the first.
The second Champions League spot goes to the winner of a mini-league, which is competed for by the teams which come in 2nd-5th places in the league. These teams are given a starting total of points, based on how well they did in the regular season, and then each team plays each other home and away, and the team who wins this mini-league claims the second Champions League spot. This system, although unfamiliar to fans of the English Premiership or La Liga, helps to stop the same teams getting into the Champions League each year, like the Premiership’s ‘Big Four’.
The most successful Greek side are Olympiacos, who have won the top Greek league a total of 37 times, including the last four times in a row. Their rivalry with Panathanaikos is one of the most passionate in world football, and the two compete in the Derby of Eternal Enemies whenever they play. Although Panathanaikos are less successful than Olympiacos, winning the Greek League 19 times, they have done better in Europe, with the 1971 European Cup final being their best run.
Despite Olympiacos’ recent dominance in the Super League, Panathinaikos are currently six points clear at the top of the table, and look like they will triumph for the first time since 2004, with French striker Djibril Cisse on fire, having scored 15 league goals so far this season. You can do both match betting and outright betting for the Super League and Greek Cup in England, and Panathinaikos can currently be backed at 1/4 to win the league, while Olympiacos are at 7/2.
