Bundesliga

The Bundesliga is the premier league of Germany and one of the most highly supported leagues in Europe. German football is not seen on the same level as the English Premier League or La Liga, but Bundesliga teams continue to do well in European competitions, showing the strength of the teams playing in Germany.

Bayern Munich have been the dominant force in the Bundesliga over the 1990’s and 2000’s but they have not had it all their own way, all this comes despite FC Bayern being by far the richest club in German football. They are also by far the most successful team in the Bundesliga, winning a total of twenty league titles since the leagues inception in 1963. FC Bayern wear four stars on their shirt to honour this record. Werder Bremen have one star thanks to their four league wins. Borussia Dortmund, Hamburger SV and VfB Stuttgart also sport one star with three league championships apiece.

The keenly contested league is nearly always run to the wire with Wolfsburg winning last years title by only two points and in the 2006/07 season VfB Stuttgart won the league with a two point gap.

This season looks to be as keenly fought as ever with Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich currently level on points and Schalke 04 just one win behind them. The fact that last seasons victors Wolfsburg are lingering in twelfth and 20 points behind the leaders shows that the Bundesliga is as competitive as ever.
